Week by week
Week 1: Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking
- Overview of different documentary styles (interview, observational, etc.)
- Choose topics and discuss research methods
Week 2: Research and Planning
- Research chosen topics and gather background information
- Plan interviews and structure the documentary
Week 3: Storyboarding and Pre-Production
- Create a storyboard to plan out shots
- Assign production roles within the group
Week 4: Interview Techniques
- Learn how to conduct interviews on camera
- Practice with real interviews in class
Week 5: Filming Interviews
- Conduct interviews with external subjects or classmates
- Film b-roll footage that supports the interview
Week 6: Multi-Location Filming
- Film in different environments, capturing scenes relevant to the documentary like the hallway, outside and classrooms
- Focus on framing and capturing natural sound
Week 7: Editing Part 1
- Learn editing techniques specific to documentaries
- Begin cutting interview footage and arranging it in sequence
Week 8: Editing Part 2
- Filming broll (background and filling footage)
- Add b-roll footage, music, and titles
Week 9: Final Touches
- Finalize all edits, sound, and transitions
- Prepare the documentary for screening
Week 10: Documentary Premiere
- Watch all completed documentaries as a group
- Celebrate and discuss the filmmaking process
