Where to Stay in Dominican Republic

Sonido del Yaque Eco-lodge

Cabins on the Yaque del Norte river, owned and run entirely by the Club de Madres Nueva Esperanza, a local women's association, and described as the country's first community sustainable development tourism project.

What to Do in Dominican Republic

Parque Mirador Sur

The country's first ecological park, six kilometres long, pedestrian and cycle only from five in the morning.

CHOCAL, Chocolate de la Cuenca de Altamira

Thirty local women, organic cacao, bought from surrounding smallholders.

27 Charcos de Damajagua

Community run canyon waterfalls, guided by people from the villages.

Playa Rincon

Five kilometres of sand and coconut palms.

Boca del Diablo to Playa Fronton coastal trail

Coastal forest to a cliff walled beach, on foot.

Playa Los Patos and Balneario Los Patos

A pebble beach with the Los Patos river forming a wide freshwater pool right behind it, in the biosphere region.

Where to Eat in Dominican Republic

Jardin Verde

Organic vegetarian, independently run, almost no signage.

Your Day by Day Dominican Republic Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1: Santo Domingo

Land in the capital and walk it before heading inland. The Colonial Zone is compact, and the ecological park along Avenida Mirador Sur is car free at peak hours and holds the largest urban tree canopy in the country.

Do Afternoon

Parque Mirador Sur

The country's first ecological park, six kilometres long, pedestrian and cycle only from five in the morning.

Eat Evening

Jardin Verde

Organic vegetarian, independently run, almost no signage.

Day 2

Day 2: To the Cordillera

Jarabacoa sits in the Cordillera Central at around 500 metres, cool enough for pine forest and the country's whitewater rivers. This is coffee and vegetable country, and the mountains behind it hold Pico Duarte, the highest point in the Caribbean.

Day 3

Day 3: Mountain days

Stay put for a day. The lodge is owned and run by a local women's association rather than an operator, generates its own cooking gas from decomposition, and builds environmental education into the stay, so the value of a second day is in the place rather than the itinerary.

Day 4

Day 4: North to Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is cacao country, and the cooperative at Altamira is thirty local women growing, fermenting and bar making organic cacao bought from surrounding smallholders. The waterfall circuit nearby is community run, with a fixed sum from every ticket going into a village fund.

Day 5

Day 5: East to Samana

Cross to Samana for the undeveloped north east. Playa Rincon runs for five kilometres with no resort development along it, which in this country is genuinely unusual.

Day 6

Day 6: The Fronton trail

The Boca del Diablo to Playa Fronton path is the best walk in the country and it is free, where the boat everyone else takes is not. Coastal forest the whole way to a beach walled in by limestone cliff.

Day 7

Day 7: South west, if you have the time

Barahona in the south west is the wildest coast, inside the Jaragua, Bahoruco and Enriquillo biosphere reserve. If the week is too tight for it, spend the day back in Samana rather than driving nine hours for one beach.
