This guide compares five Hampshire farm shops spread across the county: Hockey’s Farm Shop at South Gorley near Fordingbridge on the western edge of the New Forest, Longstock Park Farm Shop on the Leckford Estate near Stockbridge in the Test Valley, Westlands Farm Shop at Pricketts Hill near Wickham in the Meon Valley, Durleighmarsh Farm Shop outside Petersfield in East Hampshire, and Newlyns Farm Shop at North Warnborough near Hook in the north. The useful question is which shop has the food you need, and where it was grown.

Fresh vegetables on a farmers' market stall

As a Londoner, I know it is not realistic for everyone to live on a farm. A farm shop, farmers' market or community garden can be part of a more direct food routine. Start with a reachable stop and a short list, rather than expecting to change everything at once.

Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?

Your nearest shop will depend on which corner of the county you live in. Hockey’s suits the New Forest, Ringwood and Fordingbridge, and is the one to pick for rare-breed pork and a farmyard café. Longstock Park, near Stockbridge, is handy from Andover, Romsey and Winchester and stocks the estate’s own flour, apples, rapeseed oil and sparkling wine. Westlands sits between Southampton and Portsmouth and is strong on home-reared beef and soft fruit. Durleighmarsh is the choice for pick-your-own and asparagus near Petersfield, and Newlyns, about a mile from M3 Junction 5, is best for a full butchery of its own beef, lamb and pork.

All five sell food from other producers alongside their own, so it is worth asking at the counter which items come from the farm itself. Pick-your-own crops and seasonal opening times change through the year, so check the shop’s own website before a special trip.

Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

A New Forest farm rearing British Lop pigs

Hockey’s was established by Philip Hockey and his family in the 1980s at South Gorley, on the western edge of the New Forest near Fordingbridge. In 2013 Laura and her parents bought the business, which was then mainly a butchery shop, and Laura’s partner Jonny brought his background in food retail. A herd of rare-breed British Lop pigs followed in 2014, and the farm now sells acorn-fed pannage pork from them. Laura and Jonny took over the whole business in 2024, and their son Dom now works in the day-to-day running. The farm was named the New Forest National Park’s Sustainability Champion for 2026.

The traditional butchery sells beef, pork, lamb, venison, turkey and chicken. Meat is either reared on the farm or bought from named farms: Longhorn and Dexter beef from Folds Farm, and Devon Red beef, pork and Badger Faced hogget from Manor Farm. Wild venison comes from within two miles of the shop. The shop also stocks cheeses, bread, cakes, preserves, eggs, honey and seasonal fruit and vegetables, and the Farmyard Café uses meat from the butchery in its breakfasts.

Visiting and buying

Hockey’s website gives the farm shop’s hours as Monday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm, and the café’s as 8:30am to 5pm, with hot food served from 9am to 4:30pm. It is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and open on other bank holidays. South Gorley is a short drive from Fordingbridge and Ringwood. The butchery mixes home-reared and bought-in meat, so ask which cuts come from the farm’s own pigs.

Estate-grown flour, fruit and wine since 1929

Longstock Park Farm Shop belongs to the Leckford Estate in the Test Valley, which John Spedan Lewis bought as a private estate in 1929. The estate covers 2,800 acres and is now the Waitrose & Partners Farm, part of the John Lewis Partnership. It grows regeneratively farmed wheat for its own Leckford flour and bread, apples and pears in its orchards, rapeseed for cold-pressed oil and grapes for its own sparkling wine. It also keeps a beef herd, which its website says has 30 per cent more space than standard, and grain from the farm goes into Leckford gin and vodka.

The shop opened in 2013 next to the Longstock Park plant nursery, in an oak-framed building overlooking the Longstock valley. Alongside the estate’s own flour, bread, apples, pears, honey, rapeseed oil, pear cider and sparkling wine, it sells food, drink and crafts from local and regional producers. The café serves breakfasts, light lunches and cakes baked with Leckford flour, and the nursery holds national collections of Buddleja and Clematis.

Visiting and buying

The estate’s visitor page gives the farm shop’s hours as Monday to Saturday 9am to 5:30pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm, and the café’s as Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Seasonal hours may apply. Parking is free on site; only assistance dogs are allowed inside, but dogs on leads are welcome in the outdoor areas. Longstock is just north of Stockbridge, within easy reach of Andover, Romsey and Winchester. Look for the Leckford label to find what was grown on the estate.

Home-reared Hereford beef and Meon Valley soft fruit

Westlands is a family-run farm on the outskirts of Wickham in the Meon Valley, where the family has farmed since 1978. Owner Graham Collett joined after agricultural college and runs the business with his parents, Olwen and Farmer Steve. They began selling at farmers’ markets in the late 1990s and opened Westlands Farm Shop in 2001. The farm rears Hereford and Aberdeen Angus cattle, which graze outdoors in summer and are fed grass silage in the barns in winter. It also grows strawberries, raspberries and other fruit and vegetables, with more than 18 tonnes of summer soft fruit, and pumpkins for the autumn.

The butchery counter sells the farm’s own Hereford beef, Hampshire lamb raised near Romsey, free-range pork from Cameron Naughton in Devizes and Creedy Carver chickens from the Coleman family in Devon. The shop also sells home-grown fruit and vegetables, eggs from Claytons Eggs in Romsey, cheeses from the deli counter, bread, cakes, local ales, ciders and English wines, with refill stations for dried goods and cleaning products. There is a second Westlands shop on Winchester High Street.

Visiting and buying

Westlands’ website gives the Wickham shop’s hours as 7am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 4pm on Sunday. The early weekday opening is useful if you are passing on the way to work. Pricketts Hill is just outside Wickham, within easy reach of both Southampton and Portsmouth. Home-grown strawberries and raspberries are on sale for much of the year, so ask which fruit and vegetables on the day are from the farm.

Pick-your-own fruit and over 100 acres of asparagus

Durleighmarsh is a family-run farm on the Rogate Road just east of Petersfield, close to the Hampshire and Sussex border. Through the season it offers pick-your-own fruit and vegetables. Visit Hampshire lists strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries, sunberries, tayberries and plums, along with sweetcorn, calabrese, beans, courgettes and October pumpkins, plus pick-your-own flowers and a herb garden. The same listing says the farm gives over 100 acres to asparagus, which the shop’s own site names, with its strawberries, as its most popular crop. The farm also sells at several farmers’ markets, including Petersfield and Winchester.

The shop sells seasonal fruit and vegetables from the farm’s own fields and orchards, topped up by other local growers, plus chutney made on the farm. Bought-in goods include organic sourdough from a local bakery, meat, fish, juices and drinks, Auntie Val’s jams, Tracklements mustards and sauces, Mrs Darlington’s curds and Dampney’s liqueurs. Johnson’s Fish sells at the farm on Saturday mornings, and the Tea Barn next door serves breakfast and lunch.

Visiting and buying

The shop’s own website gives opening hours of Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Its Visit Hampshire listing shows longer hours in summer and shorter Sunday hours in winter, and pick-your-own times vary, so check the crop updates page before you go. Dogs are not allowed in the shop. There is on-site parking. The farm is a few minutes’ drive east of Petersfield town centre. Ask which crops are ready for picking and which shop produce is the farm’s own.

Five generations rearing cattle, pigs and sheep

The Janaway family has farmed in Hampshire since 1918 and is now in its fifth generation. Rob, David, and Rob’s sons Jack and Sam farm about a thousand acres across Lodge Farm and Tile Barn Farm on the edge of the South Downs, and Abby runs the shop. The family keeps more than 180 breeding cows bred from Shorthorn and Hereford lines, 300 Romney ewes and 100 breeding sows, producing about 1,800 Berkshire cross pigs a year outdoors around Upton Grey. Arable fields grow winter feed. Newlyns opened in 2004 and takes its name from Judy Janaway’s own family farm.

The butchery sells the farm’s home-reared beef, lamb and pork, which is hung and butchered on site. There is also a deli making salads, pies and pastries in-house, a cheese room of British artisan cheeses, a fish room with deliveries from British waters Tuesday to Saturday, groceries and chef-made ready meals. The farm café serves breakfast and lunch, and a cookery school runs classes and demonstrations through the year.

Visiting and buying

Newlyns’ website gives the farm shop’s hours as Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm. The café serves breakfast and lunch on weekdays and Saturdays and an all-day breakfast until 2pm on Sundays. Parking is free, just off the A287 and about a mile from M3 Junction 5, so it is easy to reach from Basingstoke, Hook and Odiham. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor eating area but not the café. Ask the butchers which cuts are from the family’s own herds.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates

Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.

  • Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
  • Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
  • Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
  • Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.
