Farm Shops in Worcestershire: Where to Buy Local Food

Explore Worcestershire farm shops, from Top Barn and Becketts Farm to Clive’s Fruit Farm. Check seasonal picking, locations and opening details before visiting.

Contents

This guide compares five Worcestershire farm shops: Ellenden Farm Shop at Harvington in the Vale of Evesham, Clive’s Fruit Farm on the edge of Upton upon Severn in the Malvern Hills district, Broomfields of Holt at Holt Heath just north of Worcester, Stanleys Farm Shop near Kidderminster in Wyre Forest, and Becketts Farm at Wythall in the north of Bromsgrove district. Each one grows, rears or presses some of what it sells, so the useful question is which shop has the food you need and where it was grown.

Seasonal vegetables on display at a farm stand

As a Londoner, I know it is not realistic for everyone to live on a farm. A farm shop, farmers' market or community garden can be part of a more direct food routine. Start with a reachable stop and a short list, rather than expecting to change everything at once.

Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?

The five shops sit in quite different corners of Worcestershire, so the best choice usually depends on where you start. Ellenden suits Evesham, Pershore and the Cotswold edge, and is strongest for the family’s own beef and lamb and Vale asparagus in season. Clive’s, just outside Upton upon Severn, is the one for orchard fruit, pick-your-own and pressed juice. Broomfields of Holt is a short drive north of Worcester on the Tenbury road and combines a farm shop, butchery, kitchen and country store. Stanleys, between Kidderminster and Bromsgrove, is a small pick-your-own farm, while Becketts at Wythall is the largest and handiest for south Birmingham and the M42.

Opening days differ: Clive’s and Stanleys are closed on Mondays, and Stanleys closes early on Sundays. Note that there are two Harvingtons in Worcestershire, one near Evesham (Ellenden) and one near Kidderminster (Stanleys), so use the postcode when you set off. At all five, ask which items come from the farm itself and which are bought in from neighbouring growers.

Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

Orchard fruit, asparagus and beef and lamb from Coughton

Ellenden Farm Shop is run by Sara and David Turner at Harvington, in the Vale of Evesham. They opened the shop in 2007 and extended it in 2017, adding more space for local suppliers and a café. The family also runs a 242-acre mixed arable and livestock farm at Coughton, about seven miles away, where Bob and Ann have farmed since 1960, now with David and their son Toby. Beef and lamb reared there are sold in the shop as fully traceable meat, and the orchards at Ellenden supply apples, plums and pears, along with juice and cider pressed from the apples.

The shop sells fresh produce, including the Vale’s asparagus in season from its own orchards and neighbouring growers, plus game in season and eggs from a resident flock. Named suppliers include Lawrance’s Bakery in Evesham for bread, Mawley Town Farm for milk (with glass-bottle refills), Croome Cuisine of Pershore for cheese and Fox’s Spices of Stratford upon Avon. The café serves breakfast, lunch, toast, teacakes and homemade cakes, and dogs are welcome in the covered outdoor area.

Visiting and buying

The website lists the shop as open 9am to 6pm daily and the café as open 9am to 4pm daily. Late spring is the time for Vale of Evesham asparagus, and autumn brings apples, pears and plums from the orchards. Ask which cuts of beef and lamb are from the Coughton farm and which fruit is the Turners’ own rather than a neighbour’s. Harvington is a few miles north of Evesham, so it fits easily into a trip to Evesham or Pershore.

Orchards, pick-your-own and pressed juice near Upton

Clive’s Fruit Farm is half a mile from Upton upon Severn town centre, along New Street. The family say Charlie’s father, Felix, who fought at Pegasus Bridge in the Second World War, came home with new ideas and was a pioneer of pick-your-own in the 1960s. Charlie and Jane now run the farm shop with their team. The family has about 100 acres of orchards, here and at Clive’s of Cropthorne near Pershore, growing pears, plums and cherries, with strawberries and raspberries for picking. Their own hens lay the eggs used in the farmhouse Scotch eggs.

The farm shop sells the farm’s own fruit alongside vegetables from a grower in Upton and from the Vale of Evesham, plus exotic fruit bought from importers in Birmingham. A butchery counter has sold locally sourced meat and poultry since 2002, and the deli has pies from Fladbury and cheeses from Worcester. The Juice Shed presses apple and pear juice with no added water or sugar and sells local cider and perry. There is also a café serving breakfast, lunch and specials.

Visiting and buying

The website gives farm shop hours of Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm, and café hours of Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 4pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm; both are closed every Monday. Pick-your-own runs from roughly June to autumn and dates are posted on the website’s banner, so check before you go. Ask which fruit is from the farm’s own orchards. Upton is a pleasant riverside stop between Malvern and Tewkesbury.

Heritage apples to farm shop since 1973

Broomfields of Holt is a family-run business that began in 1910 as a small four-acre orchard in Bromsgrove, growing a few heritage apple varieties. After surviving two world wars the business moved to Holt Heath, just north of Worcester, and in 1973 Maurice Broomfield set up the farm shop there. The website describes home-grown fruit as the foundation of the business and says the family still grows fruit on its own farm, selling it directly to the public alongside produce from farmers and artisans who share its values.

The site is now a farm shop with a delicatessen and an Artisans and Farmers section, a butchery selling meat from local farmers, a Farm Kitchen café and a separate Country and Garden Store. The website does not name individual suppliers, so it is worth asking at the counters which producers are local and which fruit is Broomfields’ own. The space can also be hired for events.

Visiting and buying

The website lists the farm shop as open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. The Farm Kitchen opens Monday to Saturday 9am to 4pm and Sunday 10am to 3:30pm, and the Country Store Monday to Saturday 8:30am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Christmas hours and orders are posted separately on the site. Holt Heath is a short drive from Worcester and under an hour from Birmingham.

Pick-your-own fields on a 250-acre family farm

Stanleys Farm Shop is on Fishers Castle Farm at Harvington, a few miles east of Kidderminster. The Stanley family has farmed here for more than 75 years, passing the farm from generation to generation, and David Stanley is the latest of the family to run it. The shop began around 40 years ago, when Jane Stanley had the idea of selling the farm’s produce to local people. The farm covers 250 acres, of which 25 acres are given over to pick-your-own fruit and vegetables grown through the seasons.

The shop stocks home-grown fruit and vegetables alongside produce from local independent businesses in Worcestershire and neighbouring counties. Its range covers vegetables, fruit, salad, dairy, meat, eggs, bread, frozen food, store-cupboard goods, drinks, cakes and biscuits, plants and seasonal items. The website does not name its suppliers, so ask which produce has come from the farm’s own fields that week.

Visiting and buying

The website lists the shop as open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4:30pm and Sunday 10am to 1pm, with pick-your-own Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4:30pm and Sunday 10am to 12:45pm; it is closed on Mondays. Some seasonal notices on the site appear to date from an earlier year, so ring before a special trip, particularly over Christmas. Use the DY10 postcode, as this Harvington is near Kidderminster, not Evesham.

Cereal farming family with a large farm shop

Becketts Farm is at Heath Farm in Wythall, in the north of Bromsgrove district. Albert Beckett moved from Shropshire in 1937 to take on a small farm at Forhill, and his son Alan expanded the business and developed Heath Farm, where the shop and restaurant now stand. Simon Beckett later redeveloped them, and Adrian is now the fourth generation of the family to farm in Wythall. The family moved from dairying to egg production in the past and today farms around 950 acres of wheat, oilseed rape and linseed, with further land for woodland and sheep grazing.

The farm shop has a butchery, bakery, delicatessen, sandwich bar and greengrocer, along with gifts, celebration cakes and hampers, and it stocks produce from Worcestershire, Warwickshire, the West Midlands and Birmingham. Birmingham Brewing Co. is named among its partners. The restaurant serves farmhouse food made from scratch, including a Sunday breakfast and carvery, and there is also a coffee shop.

Visiting and buying

The website lists the farm shop as open Monday to Saturday 7:30am to 5pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm and bank holidays 9am to 4pm. The restaurant opens Monday to Saturday 7:30am to 4pm and Sunday 8:30am to 4pm, with breakfast until 11am and carvery from 12:30pm. Becketts is just off junction 3 of the M42 on the A435, making it the handiest choice for south Birmingham. As the farm grows mainly cereals, ask which fresh produce is local.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates

Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.

  • Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
  • Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
  • Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
  • Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.
