Cornwall is a long county, and its farm shops are spread from the far west to the Devon border. This guide compares five: Trevaskis Farm at Connor Downs near Hayle, Roskilly’s at St Keverne on the Lizard, Lobbs Farm Shop beside the Lost Gardens of Heligan near St Austell, Trevathan Farm at St Endellion near Port Isaac, and Tre, Pol & Pen near Launceston in the Tamar Valley. The useful question is which shop has the food you need, and where it was grown.

As a Londoner, I know it is not realistic for everyone to live on a farm. A farm shop, farmers' market or community garden can be part of a more direct food routine. Start with a reachable stop and a short list, rather than expecting to change everything at once.
Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?
Where you are staying will decide a lot. In the west, Trevaskis Farm sits near the A30 between Hayle and Camborne and is the biggest of the five, with a full weekly shop, a butchery and pick-your-own. Roskilly’s is down on the Lizard near St Keverne and suits a day out, with ice cream from its own Jersey herd. Lobbs is in mid-Cornwall near Mevagissey, handy for its own beef, lamb and vegetables. Trevathan serves the north coast around Port Isaac, and Tre, Pol & Pen covers east Cornwall close to the Devon border.
If you want a proper weekly shop with long opening hours, Trevaskis is the obvious choice. For home-reared beef and lamb, look at Lobbs, Trevathan and Tre, Pol & Pen. Roskilly’s is best for dairy, ice cream and things made on the farm. Whichever you choose, ask at the counter which items come from the farm itself.
Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

Over 80 crops and home-reared British Lop pork
Trevaskis Farm at Connor Downs has been trading for more than 30 years and is run by owner Giles Eustice. The farm says it grows over 80 different crops, including soft fruits, vegetables and herbs, and some produce is picked and taken to the shop and kitchen on the same day. Its pick-your-own fields cover 28 acres, with free entry to the farm and payment only for what you pick. In the butchery, the pork is the farm’s own award-winning, home-reared British Lop.
The shop, called Trevaskis Market, aims to cover a whole weekly shop: fruit and vegetables, butchery, fish, deli, dairy, bakery and general groceries. The butchers make their own sausages, burgers and hog’s pudding and cure their own bacon and gammon, alongside South Devon beef and West Country lamb. Fish is landed at Newlyn, bread comes from bakers including Baker Tom’s and Vicky’s Bread in Helston, and the cheese counter carries Cornish Yarg, Cornish Blue and Helford White. The Farmhouse Kitchen restaurant is on site.
Visiting and buying
The website lists the market as open 8am to 8pm every day of the year except Christmas Day, which makes it the easiest of the five to fit around a busy day. The restaurant serves breakfast from 8.30am, lunch from 12pm to 3pm and evening meals from 6pm Monday to Saturday; booking is essential for Sunday roasts. Pick-your-own is seasonal, so check what is ready before you go, and ask which fruit and vegetables on the shelves were grown on the farm that day.

Organic Jersey herd and ice cream since 1987
Roskilly’s is a family-run organic dairy farm at Tregellast Barton, near St Keverne on the Lizard. Joe Roskilly was given the farm by Miss Bulkley, whom the family call Joe’s fairy godmother, and he and Rachel brought up their three children there. In 1987 milk quotas and the costs of farming with care for the environment led the family to start making ice cream. They opened the farm to visitors in 1992, and they now milk around 125 Jersey cows, whose milk goes into the ice cream.
The farm shop sells Roskilly’s own ice cream along with jams, chutneys, sauces and other products made on the farm; the family also make clotted cream and fudge. The shop also stocks other Cornish products, including vegetables from nearby Gear Farm, and bread is baked there regularly. The Croust House restaurant grew out of Rachel’s scone baking in 1994 and uses meat from animals reared on the farm. You are welcome to walk round and see the working farm.
Visiting and buying
The website gives one set of hours for the site: Wednesday to Saturday 9.30am until late, with last orders at 8pm, and Sunday to Tuesday 9.30am to 5pm, with last orders at 3pm. During half term, 24 to 31 October, it is open daily from 9.30am with last orders at 8pm. Hours may change through the year, so check before travelling. St Keverne is a fair drive down the Lizard from Helston, so it makes a good half-day trip, and it is worth asking what the shop has from the farm.

Grass-fed beef and lamb from three family farms
Lobbs Farm Shop is family owned and run by three farming brothers, Terry, Ian and Richard Lobb. Their three farms, Corran, Lower Kestle and Higher Kestle, sit next to the shop near the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Most of the beef comes from animals born on the farm, out of South Devon and Limousin suckler cows. The lamb and mutton are from Poll Dorset sheep, reared on grass and ewes’ milk. The farms also grow seasonal vegetables, including brassicas, leeks, roots, salad crops and herbs.
The shop has a butchery selling the farms’ beef and lamb along with chicken, pork and bacon, a deli with Cornish cheeses, and a homemade range of cakes, desserts, pasties, pies and ready meals. There is a full store cupboard of jams, chutneys, drinks and other groceries, much of it from Cornish producers. The Farmhouse Kitchen Café is on site, and most of the range can also be ordered through the online shop.
Visiting and buying
The website lists the shop as open Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5pm and Sunday 10.30am to 4.30pm. It is open seven days a week except in January and February, when it closes on Sundays and Mondays. Lobbs is a short drive from Mevagissey and St Austell, and easy to combine with a visit to Heligan next door. Ask which vegetables on the day came from the brothers’ own fields.

Five generations, beef, lamb and pick-your-own strawberries
Trevathan Farm at St Endellion has been farmed by the Symons family since the 1850s: Samuel Symons arrived in 1857 and Henry Symons followed in 1859. Later generations bought the farm and kept cattle, pigs and sheep, and grew wheat, oats, barley and apples. Henry Symons, the present generation, married Shirley in 1968. The family started 15 acres of self-pick strawberries and other produce in 1990, and opened the tearoom and farm shop in 1991. The farm still rears its own beef and lamb.
The farm shop sells Trevathan’s own beef and lamb and seasonal vegetables, with homemade jams and preserves, many of them made with the farm’s own fruit. You will also find pickles, honey, local cheeses, fudge, free-range eggs, clotted cream from a local dairy and Treleavens Cornish ice cream. There are homemade cakes and ready meals, Cornish beer, country wines and scrumpy, and some crafts and gifts. The restaurant and holiday cottages are on the same farm.
Visiting and buying
The website says the farm shop is open seven days a week from 9am to 4.30pm, closing at 4pm on Sundays. The farm suggests ringing 01208 880164 to check which fruit and vegetables are in stock, which is worth doing in strawberry season if you plan to pick your own. Trevathan is just inland from Port Isaac, so it suits anyone staying on the north coast between Polzeath and Tintagel. Ask which items were grown or reared on the farm.

Red Ruby Devon beef from 500-acre Landue Farm
Tre, Pol & Pen is a farm shop and restaurant in the Tamar Valley, near Launceston and close to the Devon border. It belongs to Landue Farm, which it describes as 500 acres of rolling hills and Cornish grass. The farm keeps a grass-fed herd of native Red Ruby Devon cattle and a flock of Jacob sheep, born and bred on the farm, whose fleeces are washed and sold. A beehive village among wildflower meadows and ancient woodland produces raw Cornish honey for the shop.
The butchers prepare cuts from the farm’s own Landue Red Ruby beef, and meat boxes are available. The deli team hand-make pasties, sausage rolls and quiches, and the shop bakes its own sourdough and baguettes. Blakes Bakery delivers fresh loaves daily, and dairy and eggs come from Cornish suppliers. There are groceries, Cornish wine, beer, spirits and gin, and the restaurant serves breakfasts, lunches, coffee and cake and afternoon tea.
Visiting and buying
The website lists the farm shop as open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm. The butcher’s counter is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday, so go on a weekday or Saturday if you want beef cut to order. The restaurant is open daily from 9am to 5pm. It is the most convenient of the five for east Cornwall and the Devon side of the Tamar. Ask which meat and honey come from Landue Farm.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates
Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.
- Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
- Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
- Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
- Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.
