Farm Shops near Huddersfield: Where to Buy Local Food

My Ideal World editorial guide: Farm Shops near Huddersfield: Where to Buy Local Food

Contents

For farm shops near Huddersfield, compare Hinchliffe's in Netherton, Bolster Moor in Golcar and Villa Farm Shop in Bradley. All three are family-run, and all three sell food from their own farms alongside produce from other local suppliers.

Fresh produce at a farm shop

A nearby farm shop can make buying closer to the source more practical. Start with the food you need this week and ask where it was grown. One repeatable local stop is a better beginning than a shopping routine you cannot keep up.

Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?

Hinchliffe's and Bolster Moor both have strong butchery counters and cafés, while Villa Farm grew out of a dairy and poultry business. If you want plant-based produce, ask about that range specifically. Keep a café or restaurant visit separate from the grocery enquiry.

Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

A Netherton farm shop since 1929

Hinchliffe's describes itself as Britain's oldest farm shop. Allen Hinchliffe set up a butcher's shop in Huddersfield in 1929, and four generations of the family have run the business since, with a focus on field-to-fork food and animal welfare. The butchery sells the farm's own home-reared beef, the farm rears its own chickens, and the shop stocks fresh Yorkshire produce from other local producers.

The original shop was destroyed by fire in 2010 and has since been rebuilt. The site now includes the farm shop, a deli counter, a florist and the Rusty Bull restaurant.

Visiting and buying

The farm shop opens from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. Hinchliffe's also offers local delivery on Friday afternoons for a £6 fee within five miles of the shop. If you want vegetables and other plant-based foods, ask about that selection separately from the butcher and restaurant.

A Golcar family farm with its own bakery

Bolster Moor was set up by cousins Simon Haigh and Andrew Whitwam on the site of their family farm, and the next generation now works in the business. It sells produce from its own farm and from other local farms, with an award-winning butchery, its own bakery and pies made on site.

The coffee shop next to the farm shop is popular for breakfasts, brews and cakes, with views across the moors.

Visiting and buying

The farm shop opens from 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to 4pm on Sunday. Check the range you need before travelling, and keep a grocery visit separate from any café plans so you know what you are going there to buy.

A Bradley shop built on its own milk and eggs

Villa Farm is a family business that began as a dairy and poultry farm. It built up a wholesale delivery business before opening to retail customers in 1983, first selling its own milk, eggs, cakes, pies and live rainbow trout. The shop has since added a deli and butchery with meat from local farmers, award-winning home-made sausages and bacon, and a café.

Villa Farm was named Small Farm Shop of the Year at the National Farmers' Retail and Markets Association awards, and it is known locally for its gluten-free range, which it developed with input from the Coeliac Society.

Visiting and buying

It is the closest of the three to the north side of Huddersfield, just off Bradford Road in Bradley. The opening hours published in local coverage are older, so confirm current times before travelling. If you need plant-based foods, ask what is available alongside the dairy, eggs and butchery.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates

Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.

  • Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
  • Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
  • Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
  • Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.

Farm shop and fruit-picking questions

Which farm shops are near Huddersfield?

Hinchliffe's in Netherton, Bolster Moor in Golcar and Villa Farm Shop in Bradley are three places to compare. Ask each about the produce you want, its source and current opening.

Are all these farms in the same town?

This guide includes the named area and nearby alternatives. Each farm section gives its location so you can compare the journey. A wider-area option is not necessarily inside the town in your search.

Can I pick at every farm or market?

No. Farm shops and markets may sell ready-picked food without opening fields to visitors. Ask the individual business about picking access, the crop and any booking requirement.
