Buckinghamshire runs from the Chiltern Hills in the south to the flatter dairy and arable country around Winslow in the north, and its farm shops reflect that spread. This guide compares five: Laceys Family Farm at Lane End near High Wycombe, Peterley Manor Farm near Great Missenden, Kings Farm Shop at Wendover, Orchard View Farm at Little Meadle near Princes Risborough, and Udderly Fresh at Winslow. The useful question is which shop has the food you need, and where it was grown.

As a Londoner, I know it is not realistic for everyone to live on a farm. A farm shop, farmers' market or community garden can be part of a more direct food routine. Start with a reachable stop and a short list, rather than expecting to change everything at once.
Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?
If you live in the south of the county, Laceys Family Farm at Lane End is a short drive from High Wycombe and Marlow and is best for its own Guernsey milk and grass-fed beef. Peterley Manor Farm, between Prestwood and Great Missenden, suits Amersham and Chesham, with home-grown fruit and vegetables, a butchery and a café. Kings Farm Shop at Wendover sits on the Aylesbury side of the hills and is strongest on meat. Orchard View Farm at Little Meadle is handy from Princes Risborough, Thame and Haddenham for a café stop and a small shop, while Udderly Fresh at Winslow serves Buckingham, Winslow and the Milton Keynes side.
For a weekly shop with a butcher, Laceys, Peterley Manor and Kings are the most complete. For milk straight from the herd, choose Laceys or Udderly Fresh. Several of these shops close on Mondays, so check the day before you set out.
Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

Guernsey milk and grass-fed beef since 1884
The Lacey family have farmed at Bolter End Farm, Lane End, since 1884, and the business is now in its seventh generation. The farm sits in the Chiltern Hills in the south of the county and keeps a pedigree herd of Guernsey cows, whose milk is bottled on site and sold in the shop, as well as beef cattle and arable crops. Its grass-fed beef has won a Great Taste Award, and the farm also supplies its dairy to cafés and restaurants across Bucks, Berks and Oxon. The farm shop opened in 2016.
The shop has a butchery counter where most meat is cut to order, using beef from the farm's own herd and meat from other farms within a 25-mile radius. The deli makes pies, sausage rolls, quiches and ham, and there is milk, cream, ice cream and eggs, over 40 British cheeses, seasonal fruit and vegetables, artisan bread, honey and flowers. In 2024 it was named Best Farm Shop / Deli in Bucks and Oxon at the Muddy Stilettos awards.
Visiting and buying
Laceys' website gives opening hours of Tuesday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm, Saturday 8.30am to 4pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm; the shop is closed on Mondays. Lane End is about 10 minutes' drive west of High Wycombe and a similar distance north of Marlow. The milk and beef are the farm's own, so they are the things to buy here; for other items, ask staff which are from the farm and which come from neighbouring producers.

A Chilterns fruit and vegetable farm since 1982
Roger and Jane Brill bought the Peterley site, then a derelict poultry farm, in 1982 and began selling fruit and vegetables from the farm gate. The family has farmed for more than 130 years; Roger's great-grandfather Edward Brill ran a mixed farm in Maidenhead in the 1880s. Their daughters Katy and Pip joined in 2014 and 2018. Today the farm has a farm shop, pick your own, a café, a nursery and a Christmas tree farm, and the shop won Best Farm Shop in the Chilterns from the Chiltern Society in 2019.
The shop sells the farm's own seasonal fruit and vegetables, honey and apple juice alongside British produce from more than 100 suppliers. There is a cheese room with over 40 artisan cheeses, and a deli with pies, cooked and cured meats and scotch eggs made with Dinton eggs. The in-house butchery buys whole carcasses from local farms and cuts everything by hand, making its own burgers and sausages. The Barn Kitchen café serves breakfast, lunch and cakes.
Visiting and buying
Peterley Manor Farm's website lists the farm shop and nursery as open Tuesday to Saturday 8.30am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 4pm, closed Mondays. The Barn Kitchen keeps the same hours, serves food until 3pm, and has a later Friday evening. Use HP16 0HH and look for the green farm gate sign; do not follow signs to West Peterley, Peterley Manor or East Peterley, which are private houses. Pick your own and the pumpkin patch are seasonal, so check the website first.

Home-reared beef, chicken and eggs at Wendover
Kings Farm Shop is a family-run business on the edge of Wendover, at the foot of the Chilterns on the Aylesbury side. More than thirty years ago Garry King decided to add value to the family farm by rearing and selling his own fresh meat and eggs, and the farm still rears its own free-range beef, chicken and eggs. Many of the staff have been there for years, and Garry trains apprentices to become butchers. The site also has a dog park.
The butchery counter is the heart of the shop, selling free-range chicken, pork, lamb and duck, seasonal local game, marinated cuts, hand-rolled burgers and twelve kinds of sausage, including its own Wendover Royal. Pies, quiches and steak slices are made on site. There are also cheeses, seasonal fruit and vegetables, chutneys, mustards, cakes and store-cupboard goods from other local farm shops, plus hog roast, barbecue and party catering.
Visiting and buying
The Kings Farm Shop website gives opening hours of Monday 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Thursday 8am to 5pm, Friday 8am to 5.30pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm and Sunday 9.30am to 1.30pm, and says it is closed on bank holiday Mondays. Note the short Sunday morning hours. Nash Lee End is just north of Wendover on the road towards Aylesbury. The beef, chicken and eggs are the farm's own; ask which other meat and produce comes from nearby farms.

Three generations, apple trees and hens since 2009
Jim Mackellar started Orchard View Farm in 2009 on what the family describe as a very barren 26 acres of land at Little Meadle, in the Aylesbury Vale between Princes Risborough and Longwick. It is now run by three generations of the Mackellar family with their staff. The youngest, Isla and Archie, look after the environmental side and have helped plant more than 300 native trees and shrubs. The farm has apple trees, which supply its apple juice, and chickens for eggs, and it also runs a campsite and glamping.
The farm shop is small and sits alongside a busy café serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. The shop sells the farm's own apple juice and eggs, its own sausage rolls and scotch eggs, Dinton Farm free-range eggs, Chiltern ice cream, honey made a few fields away, vegetables and a range of gifts, most of them made within 13 miles of the farm. The café uses a coffee blend roasted for the farm.
Visiting and buying
Orchard View Farm's website gives café and shop hours of Tuesday to Thursday 9am to 3pm and Friday to Sunday 9am to 4pm, closed Mondays. The café takes table bookings online, which is worth doing at weekends. Little Meadle is a few minutes from Princes Risborough and about 15 minutes from Thame. This is more a café stop with a small shop than a place for a full weekly shop, so ask which items are from the farm itself.

Raw milk from a Winslow dairy herd
The Barker family have produced milk at North Hill Farm, just outside Winslow in north Buckinghamshire, since 1978, when David Barker started with 10 locally sourced Friesians. The farm is now run by his son Ian and grandson Jim, and the herd of Friesians and Norwegian Reds numbers around 170 milking cows. The family say the cows are not intensively milked. In September 2016 they began selling raw milk from a vending machine on the farm, and later added a farm shop, cream and online delivery.
The main reason to visit is the farm's own milk: raw milk from the vending machine, with a milkshake bar where you add flavoured syrup to a litre of raw milk, and a raw milk coffee station. The farm shop also sells fresh local produce, though the website does not list it in detail or name other suppliers. Milk and milkshakes can be ordered online, with deliveries on Tuesdays and Fridays and weekly subscriptions available.
Visiting and buying
Udderly Fresh's website says the milk vending machine is open 7am to 7pm on weekdays and 7am to 6pm at weekends. The farm shop opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, but the website does not give times, so ring 07734 997151 before a special trip. Bring a bottle or buy one there. North Hill Farm is on the Aylesbury Road out of Winslow, about 15 minutes from Buckingham and 20 minutes from Milton Keynes. Ask what else in the shop comes from nearby farms.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates
Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.
- Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
- Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
- Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
- Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.
