United Kingdom farm shops and pick your own

This guide compares five farm shops across Fife: Balgove Larder just outside St Andrews, Ardross Farm Shop near Elie in the East Neuk, Pillars of Hercules at Falkland in the Howe of Fife, Blacketyside Farm Shop on the edge of Leven, and Saline Shaw Farm Shop in west Fife near Dunfermline. Each one grows or rears at least part of what it sells, from grass-fed beef and lamb to soft fruit and organic vegetables. The useful question is which shop has the food you need, and where it was grown.

Seasonal vegetables on display at a farm stand

As a Londoner, I know it is not realistic for everyone to live on a farm. A farm shop, farmers' market or community garden can be part of a more direct food routine. Start with a reachable stop and a short list, rather than expecting to change everything at once.

Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?

Fife is a long county, so where you start matters. If you are in St Andrews or north-east Fife, Balgove Larder is the obvious stop for meat from its own butchery and a café. Along the south coast, Ardross Farm Shop sits on the A917 near Elie and is strongest on its own grass-fed beef, lamb and vegetables. In the middle of the county, Pillars of Hercules near Falkland suits anyone after organic groceries and vegetables. Blacketyside, just east of Leven, is the one for home-grown soft fruit, while Saline Shaw serves Dunfermline and west Fife with its own lamb.

From Dunfermline to St Andrews is close to an hour by car, so it makes sense to pick the shop nearest your route rather than cross the county for one item. Opening hours change with the seasons at several of these shops, so check before you set off.

Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

Home-reared cattle, pigs and sheep at Strathtyrum

Balgove Larder is a farm shop just outside St Andrews, on the Strathtyrum side of the town. It describes itself as a hub for locally reared, grown, stalked, caught and handmade food, and says that everything it raises and grows on the farm travels a few miles at most before it reaches the shop. The farm rears free-range cattle, pigs and sheep, and all of them come through the shop’s own butchery. Vegetables come down from the farm’s market garden, and seasonal game is sourced from the farm, surrounding farms and the Isle of Mull.

The shop sells fruit and vegetables, dairy and deli goods, bakery, larder items, ready meals and homeware, with a traditional butchery counter at its centre where master butchers break down whole carcasses. Balgove also works with neighbouring Fife farms and selected Scottish suppliers. There is a café serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, an outdoor Eat Out, and a Steak Barn, plus butchery classes and a regular night market.

Visiting and buying

Balgove’s website gives farm shop hours of Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 6pm. The café is open daily from 9am, with breakfast until 11.30am and lunch from noon to 3pm, and closes at 4.30pm. The Steak Barn opens Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm to 9pm. Neither the café nor the Steak Barn takes bookings, and dogs other than service dogs are not allowed inside. The site is wheelchair accessible. Ask at the butchery counter which cuts are from the farm’s own animals.

Pasture for Life beef and over 40 vegetables

The Pollock family have farmed in the East Neuk since 1870 and took the tenancy of Ardross Farm on Elie Estate in 1968. In 2005, under pressure from rising costs and the supermarkets, they opened a shop in an old cart shed to sell their own beef direct, with one chest freezer. All the beef, lamb and mutton in the shop is their own. The cattle and sheep are grass fed and the farm has been Pasture for Life assured since 2016. The farm also grows over 40 varieties of seasonal vegetables, picked by hand for the shop each morning.

Alongside its own meat and vegetables, the shop stocks free-range eggs, pork, venison and game from local estates, free-range chickens, farmhouse cheeses, bread, locally smoked fish, wines and beers, jams and farmhouse ice cream. The farm kitchen makes ready meals, puddings, soups and pies from the farm’s beef, and chutneys from surplus fruit. The family say 90% of the produce comes from farming families and small artisan firms.

Visiting and buying

Ardross Farm Shop’s website says it is open seven days a week, 9am to 5.30pm, with late opening until 8pm on Thursdays. It is on the A917 main road near Elie and can be reached by car, bus, bicycle or on foot from the Fife Coastal Path. The shop is all on one level. Home delivery is offered in North East Fife for a £4.50 charge if you order by phone or email before 3pm on Thursday. Ask which vegetables were picked on the farm that morning.

An organic market garden growing since 1983

Pillars of Hercules began as an organic market garden in 1983 and was run by private owners for its first 40 years, growing slowly into a shop, café, campsite and bothy. In 2023 it passed to Falkland Rural Enterprises Ltd, the farming company that runs the land at Falkland Estate. Organic vegetables are still grown on site for the café, shop and veg boxes, with salad leaves in polytunnels through the winter and apples from two orchards, the first planted in 1992. Fertility comes from compost and green manures rather than animal manure, and in 2025 it began growing cut flowers.

The shop sells organic wholefoods, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan foods, local meat and dairy, and bread made on the premises, along with beer, wine, household goods, books and cards. There is a refill section for oils, dry goods and cleaning products. The site says much of the fruit and veg is grown there and on local farms. There is also a vegetarian café, a plant nursery and veg boxes delivered across Fife.

Visiting and buying

Pillars’ website lists winter hours of 9am to 5pm daily for the shop and 9am to 4pm for the café. It also gives new hours from 26 October 2026: the shop open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and the café Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm. Because the hours are changing, check the website before a weekend visit. Pillars is just outside Falkland. Ask which vegetables in the shop are from the market garden that week.

Strawberries, raspberries and potatoes since 1992

The present owners bought Blacketyside in 1992. They started as livestock farmers and planned to grow cereals, but kept the soft fruit that was already on the farm. For 14 years they sold strawberries and raspberries from a mobile shop at the end of the farm road, then opened a small all-year farm shop in 2001 and built the current shop and tearoom just east of Leven in 2007. Strawberries are grown on tabletops in polytunnels, with heated tunnels stretching the season from late March to November. The farm also grows blackberries, blueberries, cherries, potatoes, carrots and oats.

In season the shop sells its own freshly picked strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and gooseberries, with frozen fruit through the year, plus its own potatoes and unwashed carrots. Some of the farm’s oats are milled for the shop. There is an in-house butchery run by Steve Mitchell, a florist called the Green Room, a tearoom, takeaway food, an ice cream counter, plants, logs, hampers and fruit and veg boxes.

Visiting and buying

Blacketyside’s website says the shop is open six days a week but does not publish opening times, so phone 01333 423034 before you travel. There is easy parking on site. The fruit season runs from late spring into autumn, which is the best time to find the farm’s own berries, though frozen fruit is sold all year. Leven is about 25 minutes from Kirkcaldy by car. Ask which fruit and vegetables on the day are from the farm.

Pedigree Lleyn lamb from a working sheep farm

Saline Shaw is mainly a sheep farm, near the village of Saline north-west of Dunfermline. The farm shop and café were newly built and opened in September 2020. The farm keeps a QMS-assured flock of pedigree Lleyn sheep, which are grass fed, and its own home-bred lamb is sold in the shop, from double loin chops and burgers to shoulders for roasting. It is the only one of the shops in this guide in the west of the county, which makes it useful for Dunfermline and the villages around it.

Beyond its own lamb, the shop names many of its suppliers: eggs from Eggs O Lynn Farm in Saline, Puddledub bacon and pork from Auchtertool, meat from Montgomery Butchers in Oakley, bread from Fisher & Donaldson in Cupar and Wild Hearth Bakery in Comrie, and milk and butter from Grahams Dairies. It also sells cheese, chutneys and gifts. The café serves an all-day brunch menu designed by chef Mark Heirs.

Visiting and buying

Saline Shaw’s website says the farm shop and café are open seven days, 9am to 4pm. No phone number is published, so contact the shop by email at info@salineshawfarmshop.co.uk if you want to check stock. The shop is on the B913 near Saline, about 15 minutes’ drive from Dunfermline. According to the Welcome to Fife listing, the outdoor seating is dog friendly and there is a bicycle area for cyclists. Ask when the farm’s own lamb is available.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates

Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.

  • Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
  • Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
  • Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
  • Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.
