Greater Manchester is mostly towns and suburbs, but farms still ring the edges of all ten boroughs. This guide covers six places to buy food from the people who grow or rear it: Albion Farm Shop above Delph in Saddleworth, Falshaw’s dairy farm at Bury, Greenslate Community Farm on Billinge Hill near Wigan, Little Heath at Dunham Massey in Trafford, Norbury Farm at Hazel Grove in Stockport and Wythenshawe Community Farm in Manchester.

Freshly dug potatoes

You do not need to live on a farm to eat closer to one. A single stop you can return to, a short shopping list and a cool bag are a good start, and most of these places will tell you what came from their own land if you ask.

Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?

Pick by side of the county. Albion at Delph suits Oldham and the Pennine side, Falshaw’s the north around Bury, Greenslate the west around Wigan, Little Heath the south-west around Altrincham, Norbury the south-east around Stockport, and Wythenshawe Community Farm south Manchester.

For own-reared meat, Albion, Little Heath, Norbury and Wythenshawe all sell it. Falshaw’s is a dairy farm with its own herds and an ice cream parlour. Opening days vary: Little Heath and Greenslate close early in the week, Falshaw’s closes on Mondays and Norbury on Sundays.

Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates

Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.

  • Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
  • Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
  • Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
  • Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.
