Find farm shops, veg box schemes, farmers’ markets and pick-your-own options in Gwent. Use map searches and verify opening times before travelling.

Contents

Gwent’s farm shops are mostly found in the rural Monmouthshire half of the county, along the roads between Abergavenny, Monmouth, Raglan and Chepstow. This guide compares four of them: Square Farm Shop at Mitchel Troy near Monmouth, Apple County Cider Co at Skenfrith in the countryside between Abergavenny and Monmouth, Raglan Farm Park’s farm shop on the Chepstow Road at Raglan, and Newhall Farm Shop at Pwllmeyric outside Chepstow. The useful question for each is simple: which shop has the food you need, and where was it grown?

Fresh vegetables on a farmers' market stall

As a Londoner, I know it is not realistic for everyone to live on a farm. A farm shop, farmers' market or community garden can be part of a more direct food routine. Start with a reachable stop and a short list, rather than expecting to change everything at once.

Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?

The four shops sit roughly in a ring around central Monmouthshire. From Abergavenny, Skenfrith and Raglan are the nearest; from Monmouth, Square Farm Shop at Mitchel Troy is just outside town. Raglan suits anyone coming up the A449 from Newport or Cwmbran, and Newhall at Pwllmeyric sits on the A48 just west of Chepstow, handy from Caldicot and the Severn crossings. For organic meat and vegetables from the farm itself, choose Square Farm; for cider from home-grown apples, Apple County. Raglan combines a farm park with a small shop, and Newhall is the place for a full weekly shop with a butcher and fishmonger.

Newport, Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and the Caerphilly side of Gwent are more urban, and we could not verify a dedicated, currently trading farm shop there for this guide. People in those areas will find Raglan the easiest drive, while Newhall at Chepstow is a short run along the M48 and A48.

Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

Three generations of the Whittall family farming organically

Square Farm was built from scratch in 1978 by Ted and Kathleen Whittall. It is now owned and run by their son, Robert Whittall, and his son Ryan, the third generation to farm here, runs the farm shop. The family describes it as a traditional mixed farm of about 180 acres, and it also manages 30 acres at Devauden, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which it has worked for nearly 30 years. The farm keeps cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks and geese, grows cereals and root crops for the animals, and grows fruit and vegetables for the shop. The family says it farms organically, with hedgerows and orchards for wildlife.

The shop sells the farm’s own lamb, pork, goat, beef, poultry and eggs, along with organic vegetables. These sit alongside cheeses, preserves and other goods from farms and makers across the Wye Valley. The shop’s suppliers page says it is still collecting details of these producers, so ask at the counter which items come from the farm and which have been brought in. There is also an online shop if you cannot get to Mitchel Troy.

Visiting and buying

The shop’s website says it is open seven days a week: Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday 10am to 3pm. The website does not give a phone number; it offers a contact form instead. Mitchel Troy is just south-west of Monmouth, a few minutes from the town centre. Vegetables follow the seasons, so the home-grown range changes through the year. If you want a particular cut of meat, use the contact form to ask before a long journey.

Single-variety cider from apples grown on the farm

Apple County Cider Co is the business of the award-winning cider maker Ben Culpin, based at Whitehouse Farm near Skenfrith, in the countryside between Abergavenny and Monmouth close to the English border. According to Visit Monmouthshire, the farm grows cider apples and blackcurrants. Its ciders are single-variety and made from apple juice, using traditional cider apple varieties such as Dabinett, Vilberie and Brown Snout. That makes it one of the few places in Gwent where you can buy a drink made from fruit grown on the same farm and talk to the people who grew it.

This is a producer shop rather than a full grocery. Visit Monmouthshire says the cider shop is open seven days a week for cider tasting, and it also sells local produce. It is a good stop for a bottle or two to take home, or for gifts, alongside other local food from the area. Ask which items are made on the farm and which come from other local producers, as the range is likely to change through the year.

Visiting and buying

The opening hours here come from the farm’s Visit Monmouthshire listing, which gives the shop as open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Tourism listings can fall out of date, so phone 01600 750835 to confirm before travelling, especially in winter or on bank holidays. Skenfrith is reached on country lanes, about 20 to 25 minutes from either Abergavenny or Monmouth. If you plan to taste the cider, bring a passenger who can drive home.

Home-reared meat at a family farm park near Raglan

Raglan Farm Park is a farm attraction on the Chepstow Road just outside Raglan, close to the A40 and A449 junction. Most visitors come to see the animals, but the farm also has its own farm shop, and the website says the meat sold there is produced and reared on the farm. The website does not give the history of the farm or the family behind it, so we have not tried to tell that story here. It is worth asking in the shop which animals are reared for meat and when particular cuts are available.

The farm shop sells locally sourced vegetables, preserves, drinks and cheeses, as well as the farm’s own meat. The website does not name the suppliers, so ask staff where the vegetables and cheeses come from if that matters to you. The farm park also has a café, Fran and Amy’s Kitchen, which makes it easy to combine a morning with children and the animals with some food shopping on the way home.

Visiting and buying

Raglan Farm Park’s website does not list opening hours. Its Visit Monmouthshire listing for 2026 gives the farm shop as open Monday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, open on bank holidays and closed on Christmas Day. Please phone 01291 690 319 to confirm, as hours can change. The farm park website says there is no need to book a visit. Raglan is about 15 minutes from Abergavenny or Monmouth and around 25 minutes from Newport via the A449.

A family-run shop beside Chepstow Garden Centre

Newhall Farm Shop is part of Chepstow Garden Centre at Pwllmeyric, a family-owned independent business on the A48 just west of Chepstow. It is not a working farm itself, but the shop says local produce is its main focus, with products from the Wye Valley, the Forest of Dean, across Wales and the South West. Its on-site butcher, Neil Powell, has supplied meat since 1857 and says its beef and pigs are naturally reared in Herefordshire and Monmouthshire on trusted farms, including its own.

Besides the Neil Powell butchery counter there is a fresh fish counter run by The Fabulous Fish Company, plus fruit and vegetables, artisan cheeses, drinks and gifts. Named suppliers include Netherend Farm butter, made less than ten miles away, Blaenafon Cheddar from Blaenavon and Snowdonia Cheese. Milk comes from a local dairy farmer, and cider, beer, gin and wine come from the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. Ask which fruit and vegetables are local.

Visiting and buying

The shop’s website gives its opening hours as Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4.30pm. The Neil Powell butchers counter closes at 3pm every Monday, so go earlier in the day if you want meat. Separate hours apply at Easter and Christmas. There is free on-site parking, and the garden centre’s restaurant and café is on the same site. Pwllmeyric is about five minutes from Chepstow and easy to reach from Caldicot or the M48.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates

Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.

  • Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
  • Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
  • Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
  • Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.
