The West Midlands county is mostly the conurbation of Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton and the Black Country, so it is a smaller local-food area in this guide. We list three places we could confirm: Moseley Farmers’ Market in Birmingham, Oakes Farm Shop at Balsall Common in Solihull and Hayhead Farm Shop in Walsall. For more farm shops, see the nearby county guides at the end.

Fresh vegetables on a local market stall

You do not need to live on a farm to eat closer to one. A single stop you can return to, a short shopping list and a cool bag are a good start, and most of these places will tell you what came from their own land if you ask.

Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?

For the widest range of producers in one place, Moseley Farmers’ Market on the last Saturday of the month is the best choice: every trader grows, bakes, brews or makes what they sell. Oakes Farm Shop at Balsall Common suits Solihull and Coventry, with a café and butchery.

Hayhead in Walsall is a long-established farm shop for the north of the county. Neither Oakes nor Hayhead publishes hours on its own website, so phone first.

If you live in Birmingham without a car, Moseley is the easiest to reach by bus, and the market is the best way to meet several growers and bakers in one morning. For a bigger farm shop day out, combine Oakes Farm Shop with a visit to one of the Warwickshire farms listed in our nearby county guide.

Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

Producers only, for over 25 years

Moseley Farmers’ Market is community-run by volunteers and has been part of village life for over 25 years. It has up to 60 stalls of seasonal fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese, meat and preserves.

All the traders grow, bake, brew or make what they sell, and it is an accredited Real Farmers Market with FARMA, the farm retail association.

Visiting and buying

The market runs on the last Saturday of every month; the next is Saturday 31 October 2026. FarmingUK gives the hours as 9am to 2pm.

A market map and updates are posted on the market’s social media before each market day. For parking, the market’s site gives B13 8HJ.

Field to fork in the Solihull countryside

Oakes Farm Shop is run by the Oakes family with their two sons and two daughters, on the B4101 between Knowle and Balsall Common in Solihull borough. The family says that after 12 years their dream became a reality with the opening of the farm shop, café and butchery.

It follows a field-to-fork approach, working with local producers.

Visiting and buying

The farm’s own site does not publish hours. Big Barn lists it as open Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 3pm, so phone to confirm before you go.

Over 50 years of fresh food

Hayhead Farm Shop says it has been established for over 50 years and sells a huge range of fresh food, flowers and quality garden products.

Its site does not say what the farm itself grows, so ask in the shop which produce comes from Hayhead.

Visiting and buying

Opening hours are not published on its website, so phone 01922 628736 before you travel.

The address above comes from FarmingUK; the farm’s own site gives only Walsall.

Nearby counties

The farmland around the West Midlands has many more farm shops. See farm shops in Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire.

Knowing a farm shop you can return to is also one of the most practical ways to be ready for disruption. Read The Be Ready Campaign: A UK Guide to Stocking Your Home With Healthy, Local Food, and use the Be Ready Map to find more local food across the UK.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates

Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.

  • Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
  • Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
  • Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
  • Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.
