This guide compares five Wiltshire farm shops spread across the county: Ansty PYO & Farm Shop west of Salisbury, the Three Daggers Farm Shop at Edington below Salisbury Plain, Hartley Farm Shop and Kitchen at Winsley near Bradford on Avon, Allington Farm Shop on the edge of Chippenham, and Eversfield Organic on Marlborough High Street. Each one sells a different mix of its own produce and food from nearby makers, so the useful question is which shop has the food you need and where it was grown.

Fresh vegetables and fruit in baskets and crates at a market

As a Londoner, I know it is not realistic for everyone to live on a farm. A farm shop, farmers' market or community garden can be part of a more direct food routine. Start with a reachable stop and a short list, rather than expecting to change everything at once.

Which farm shop or picking farm should you choose?

Wiltshire is a large county, so start with the shop nearest your usual journeys. In the south, Ansty is the choice for soft fruit in summer, pumpkins in autumn and home baking all year. Around Westbury, Trowbridge and Devizes, the Three Daggers at Edington pairs a farm shop with a village pub and brewery. In the west, Hartley Farm at Winsley is handy from Bath and Bradford on Avon for grass-fed beef and organic vegetables. In the north, Allington sits on the A420 outside Chippenham with a big butchery counter, and Marlborough shoppers have Eversfield Organic in the town centre.

If meat is your priority, Allington and Hartley both sell beef from their own herds, and Eversfield sells organic meat from its family farm in Devon. If you want fruit, vegetables and baking from the field behind the shop, Ansty and the Three Daggers are the better bets. Opening days differ a good deal, so check before you set off.

Check the farm’s current crops, opening times and prices before travelling. Picking seasons vary, and a farm shop may sell produce without offering pick-your-own visits.

From dairy farming to soft fruit and home baking

Ansty PYO is a family-run pick-your-own fruit farm in the village of Ansty, west of Salisbury. The family started out as dairy farmers and diversified into pick-your-own in 1998, beginning with just four fruits: strawberries, raspberries, tayberries and blackcurrants. The range has since grown to include blueberries, blackberries, redcurrants, gooseberries and plums, along with rhubarb and a small selection of vegetables such as sweetcorn and runner beans. In autumn there are pumpkins and squash to pick and a maize maze, and the farm describes a zero-mile food policy on what it grows itself.

The farm shop sells homemade bread, baked on Thursdays and Saturdays, including a popular five-seed malty loaf, sourdough, wholemeal and cornbread. There are sponge cakes, fruitcakes, brownies and puddings, plus jams and jellies made from the farm’s soft fruit and hundreds of jars of Seville orange marmalade each January. Local suppliers named on its site include refillable whole milk from the Bowerman family in Semley, Mere Fish Farm trout, Donhead honey, Stone Daisy beers and Cranborne Chase cider. A tea room serves cakes, bakes and coffee.

Visiting and buying

During the pumpkin picking season the farm shop’s website lists these hours: Wednesday 10am to 2pm, Thursday to Saturday 9.30am to 5pm, and Sunday 10.30am to 3pm. The shop is closed for an autumn break from 1 to 6 November. The tea room closes 30 minutes before the shop. Hours change with the seasons, so check the website before a special trip, especially if you want to pick fruit. Ask which fruit and vegetables are home-grown on the day, as the farm also buys in extra produce.

Priory Farm vegetables and an on-site brewery

The Three Daggers is a village pub in Edington, on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain between Westbury and Devizes, with a farm shop and a microbrewery alongside. The farm shop sits across from the pub in an oak-framed building that overlooks the brewery. Much of its produce comes from Priory Farm in the village, next to the pub, which supplies fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. The team also picks, presses and bottles its own apple juice there. The brewery, led by head brewer Ricky Carr, brews several times a week, and its beers are sold in the shop.

The shop sells fresh produce, local cheeses, handmade chutneys and deli food, with indoor and outdoor seating for coffee and light lunches. Suppliers named on its website include bread and cakes from master baker James Bollen, pork from Padfield Porkies, meat from Walter Rose & Sons butchers in Devizes, Trewithen Dairy, Clifton Coffee from Bristol and Hanora kombucha made in Wiltshire. It is family friendly and welcomes dogs.

Visiting and buying

The Three Daggers website gives farm shop hours of Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 4pm. The shop is just off the B3098 in the middle of Edington, and Visit Wiltshire notes a large car park and the number 87 bus from Westbury, Trowbridge and Devizes. It is a good stop if you are walking on the Plain or visiting Edington Priory church. Ask which vegetables have come from Priory Farm that week, as the selection follows the season.

Regenerative grass-fed beef and organic vegetables

The Bowles family has farmed in Winsley since the early 1800s, and Tom Bowles is the fifth generation to farm there. Hartley Farm is a 125-acre farm on the Wiltshire and Somerset border, between Bath and Bradford on Avon. The fields are permanent pasture with no tillage, and the family says it farms on regenerative principles, having reseeded over 100 acres and planted hundreds of metres of native hedgerow. A suckler herd of Hereford and Angus cows produces grass-fed beef, and the farm also grows organic vegetables and salads. The farm shop and kitchen opened in August 2008.

The farm shop has a butchers counter selling the farm’s own beef alongside lamb, pork, gammon, bacon, sausages and poultry, plus fruit and vegetables, dairy and deli food. The site says the shop also sells the farm’s sourdough and honey, with food and drink from other local farmers, growers and makers. The Farm Kitchen serves food and drink, and The Cabin does takeaway. Meat, fruit and vegetable boxes can be ordered online.

Visiting and buying

Hartley Farm’s website lists the farm shop as open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday 9am to 4pm. The Farm Kitchen is open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 4pm, and The Cabin Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 3pm. The farm is in Winsley, just off the B3108 between Bath and Bradford on Avon, with plenty of free parking. Ask at the butchers counter which cuts are from the farm’s own herd, as not every meat sold is reared on the farm.

Three generations rearing cattle, pigs, sheep and turkeys

The Reynolds family has farmed Allington Bar Farm near Chippenham as tenants for three generations. Paul and Jenny Reynolds opened the farm shop in 1981, selling potatoes and eggs from the farm. Today their son Tim runs the farm and shop with his wife Naomi, and their daughter Emma runs the café. The farm covers about 700 acres at Allington Bar and nearby land, growing cereals, potatoes and grass, and rearing cattle, pigs, sheep and turkeys, mainly traditional British breeds, on home-grown feed. All of the farm’s meat and potatoes are sold through the shop.

The shop was extended in 2008 to add a butchery, deli and café. The in-house butchery sells a wide range of meat and cuts, almost all reared on the farm, and the deli counter has local, artisan and continental cheeses. There are fresh salads, fruit and vegetables, groceries from small independent producers, some of whom have supplied the shop for over 30 years, ready-to-eat food, hampers and, in season, home-reared turkeys and Christmas trees.

Visiting and buying

Allington’s website lists shop hours of Monday to Wednesday 9am to 5.30pm, Thursday to Saturday 9am to 6pm, Sunday 9.30am to 4pm and bank holidays 10am to 4pm. The café is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 4.30pm, Sunday 9.30am to 4pm and bank holidays 10am to 4pm. The shop is on the A420 Bristol Road on the outskirts of Chippenham. Order Christmas turkeys early, and ask which vegetables are from the farm.

Organic meat from the family’s Dartmoor farm

Eversfield Organic is a family-run organic business, accredited by the Soil Association, that also sells organic meat by home delivery across the UK. Its Marlborough shop is on the High Street, in the town centre, rather than on a farm. The grass-fed organic meat it sells comes from the family’s own farm on Dartmoor in Devon, so this is the one shop in this guide where the farm is outside Wiltshire. Visit Wiltshire’s listing says the fruit and vegetables come from its market garden. It is included as the main farm-owned food shop for the Marlborough area.

The shop has a butchers counter, deli counters with British charcuterie and dairy, a fishmonger, fruit and vegetables and larder goods. There is also a wine cave, a coffee bar, a fully organic café and a Food to Go counter. The online range covers organic beef, lamb, pork, poultry, wild game and sustainable fish, and the shop is a useful source of organic Christmas meat if you live in east Wiltshire.

Visiting and buying

These hours are from Visit Wiltshire’s listing for 2026: the farm shop is open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm; the café Monday to Saturday 9am to 4.30pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm; and Food to Go Monday to Saturday 8am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Please confirm by phone before a special trip. Ask which items are from the family farm and where the vegetables are grown.

Plan your farm visit, produce, quantities and picking dates

Choose one or two farms or farm shops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will do with it when you get home. If one crop is unavailable, decide whether to choose a different farm, change the meal or return another day.

  • Confirm the crop, public opening and any booking requirement.
  • Ask whether you can pick yourself or buy already picked.
  • Check the price unit, payment method and containers.
  • Ask about access, parking and the correct visitor entrance.

Farm shop and fruit-picking questions

Where can I buy local food in Wiltshire?

Good Wiltshire farm shops include Ansty PYO & Farm Shop west of Salisbury, the Three Daggers Farm Shop at Edington, Hartley Farm Shop and Kitchen at Winsley, Allington Farm Shop near Chippenham and Eversfield Organic in Marlborough. Allington, Hartley and Ansty sell the most from their own land.

Are all these farms in the same town?

No. Wiltshire covers a wide area, and this guide spreads its choices across the county. Each farm section gives its location so you can compare the journey before you set off.

Can I pick at every farm or market?

No. Farm shops and markets may sell ready-picked food without opening fields to visitors. Ask the individual business about picking access, the crop and any booking requirement.
