How we decide the best place to stay in Curaçao
What stands out first on Curaçao is how much of the power is generated on site rather than pulled from the grid, so we start there. LionsDive Beach Resort runs an 864 panel solar power array that supplies roughly 70 per cent of its daily energy, a serious commitment on an island this sun drenched.
On a dry Caribbean island that imports much of its fresh water, we pay close attention to how each property handles every drop. Villa San Sebastian Curaçao impressed us on water conservation, drawing on deep well water and rainwater collection, then feeding greywater from its kitchens and showers to a small forest of banana trees.
We also look for stays that earn their stripes through independent certification rather than their own marketing, which is rarer than it should be here. Morena Eco Resort holds Green Globe, Green Key and Travelife certification all at once, while preserving 80 per cent of the native vegetation on its site.
Finally we check whether the grounds feed the guests and support the local wildlife rather than fighting it. Mondi Lodge grows its own fruit and vegetables in a tropical garden alive with iguanas, hummingbirds and parakeets, so what reaches the table has travelled only a few steps.
