Pick your own fruit in South Africa

Farm-shop exterior surrounded by greenery

Contents

For a South African fruit-picking trip, start with the crop a farm actually opens to visitors. Five farms below advertise public picking on their own websites. Two other names in the collection are kept separately as places to investigate, without presenting them as confirmed picking options.

Checked on 13 October 2026 and reviewed again on 27 October 2026. Follow each farm’s latest opening and booking notice before travelling: a café or shop can be open while the picking fields are closed.

Map and location

Blueberry Heights Farm, A24, R71 Road, Magoebaskloof, Limpopo, 0730. Open in Google Maps. Phone: café bookings 071 540 3800; farm and accommodation 083 880 8787.

A small organic farm for blueberries and golden kiwis

Blueberry Heights is a small organic farm on the north-eastern escarpment of Limpopo, where the farm describes cold winters, warm summers and high rainfall as ideal for berries. It grows blueberries and golden kiwis, and its website notes press coverage from 2018 describing it as South Africa’s only organic gold kiwi producer.

Alongside the fruit, the farm runs a café, an annual Berry Festival (usually in February, with picking, live music and a trail run) and a free 5km Magoebaskloof Farm Run every Saturday at 08:00, with views over Ebenezer Dam and Stanford Lake.

Visiting and buying

Blueberry picking runs in summer: December, January and early February. The farm’s welcome notice says the 2026 season starts on 1 December 2026. One older section of the site still shows a 2025 notice, so phone 071 540 3800 to confirm before a long drive.

The café is open Monday to Sunday, 08:00 to 16:00, with sundowners and dinner on Friday and Saturday, 16:00 to 20:00. The farm cottage is currently unavailable because of renovations.

The Field Berry Farm

4.6 / 5 · 635 reviews · Google

Map and location

The Field Berry Farm, south of Johannesburg. Leave the N1 South at the Grasmere Engen 1 Stop, keep left behind the garage and follow the “Berry Farm” signs along the farm road for about 2km. Open in Google Maps. Phone: 064 512 4913.

Raspberries, blackberries and a family day out

The Field Berry Farm opens its raspberry fields to visitors during the raspberry season, from January to April, and also runs a raspberry-picking festival. The family behind the farm tells its story in a children’s book, Big Mama’s Raspberry Farm, and the farm sells its own berry and almond products.

Away from the fields there is a 5km self-guided walking trail that is good for birding, plus a jungle gym, obstacle course and bicycle track for children (bring bikes and helmets).

Visiting and buying

Entry is by online booking only, and walk-ins are turned away. During the raspberry season the farm opens at weekends, 09h00 to 15h00. Entrance is R60 for adults and R50 for children, and picked berries cost R160 per kg. Early-season blackberry picking is listed for 6, 13, 16 and 20 December, 9am 3pm (booking required), and raspberry picking resumes in January 2027.

Arrive early in the season and early in the day: the farm says it can never know how many berries there will be. Facilities are wheelchair friendly, but there are no pathways in the berry field itself. Overcast days are fine for picking, so pack gum boots and an umbrella.

Strawberries, kiwis and a full day out near George

Redberry Farm grows strawberries, raspberries, golden kiwis and kiwi berries on the edge of George, and pick-your-own strawberries is one of its headline activities. It also has a farm stall, a Berry Boutique selling jams, syrups and preserves, a tea garden and several eateries, including handcrafted ice cream.

For children there is a hedge maze, a giant strawberry with a slide, pony rides, go-carts, bumper boats and a playground, so it suits families who want more than a quick pick.

Visiting and buying

The farm is open Monday to Saturday, 9am 4pm, and closed on Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday. There is no entrance fee; you pay per activity, and tickets come from the Farm Stall. Booking is not required.

No pets are allowed (guide dogs only), and outside food is not permitted. Strawberry picking depends on the crop, so ask at the Farm Stall what is ready on the day.

Tangaroa The Strawberry Farm

Map and location

Tangaroa Strawberry Farm, S46 on R560, Skeerpoort, North West. Open in Google Maps. Phone: 082 503 5996.

Naturally grown strawberries below the Witwatersberg

Tangaroa grows its strawberries naturally, so the farm describes each visit as different: you search beneath the leaves rather than fill a basket from tidy rows. It also offers dahlia, zinnia and sunflower picking, and has a spa and guest house.

There are shady picnic spots, a children’s jungle gym and a labyrinth with views of the Witwatersberg mountain range. You can bring a picnic, blankets or a portable braai and spend the day.

Visiting and buying

Strawberry picking is on Saturdays and Sundays during the season, usually 08:00 to 16:00. Entrance is R100 for adults and R70 for children under 10. It covers the farm, the picnic areas and the fields for the day, with no fixed picking session. Strawberries to take home are charged per bucket.

The farm’s latest update says the season has begun but the big harvest is still on its way. Fields may close in poor weather or when there is too little ripe fruit, so check the picking page before you travel.

Other farm leads: picking not confirmed here

Hillcrest Berry Orchard

Hillcrest, in the Banhoek Valley near Stellenbosch, describes berry growing, a farm shop and a restaurant on its own website. That page does not establish a public pick-your-own offer. Ask the farm directly before planning a picking visit.

Terebinte Berry Farm

Terebinte, near Graskop, appears in the original farm collection. A current operator notice confirming public picking, crops and visit dates was not established during this review. Check the farm’s own page or contact it before treating this as a picking option.

Choose the crop, then check the visit

For blueberries, start with Blueberry Heights. For raspberries, check The Field Berry Farm. For strawberries, check Redberry or Tangaroa. Wildebraam advertises blackberries and youngberries; The Field Berry Farm also lists selected blackberry-picking dates. Availability changes with the season and the crop.
