Four verified places inside Midlothian and one organic farm just over the Pentlands, from Pathhead to Penicuik
Farm shops in Midlothian are mostly farms that sell direct, not shops with a till. The five worth knowing are Bramblewood Farm at Pathhead, a new farm on the Preston Hall Estate selling grass reared meat and eggs; the monthly market at Dalkeith Country Park; Rosewell Market at The Steading, a community run building in the village; Springfield Game and Country Meats near Penicuik; and, just over the line in the City of Edinburgh, The Free Company at Balerno.

Under my post about the biggest strawberry farm supplying UK supermarkets, one of you wrote:
Yep, haven’t shopped at a supermarket for quite a few years now, living perfectly fine. It’s just a supermarket, right? But they said they’re eco-friendly, right?
A reader in my comments
Living perfectly fine. That is the line people do not believe until they try it.
It takes a little planning in Midlothian, because the good farms sell by order, by delivery or once a month. So here is the plan. (And here is what Apeel is and whether you can wash it off, for the supermarket fruit you are leaving behind.)
Which Midlothian farm should you buy from?
For meat and eggs from the farm that raised them, Bramblewood at Pathhead and Springfield near Penicuik are the two. Bramblewood delivers boxes and has a £35 minimum for free delivery. Springfield’s Gavin and Anna Brown rear Highland and Simmental cattle, Suffolk sheep and Saddleback pigs; ring before you go, as I could not confirm their current open mornings.
For a browse, the market at Dalkeith Country Park runs on the third Saturday of the month, 10am to 3pm, outside Restoration Yard. Rosewell Market at The Steading is smaller and village run, with a larder that opened there in April 2026.
For organic, cross the Pentlands to The Free Company at Balerno, in the City of Edinburgh. It farms native breeds and a market garden below the hills, and it holds a Michelin Green Star.

Grass reared chickens, woodland pigs and an on farm butchery at Pathhead
Bramblewood Farm is a small farm on the Preston Hall Estate at Pathhead, started in June 2025 by Nick after 15 years in the Army. The farm says it began with chickens raised on grass, then added pigs kept in woodland and a flock of sheep for hogget and mutton, and it now also sells shorthorn cross Highland beef. Animals are moved onto fresh grass through the season, and the farm says it uses no routine antibiotics. It quotes 40 acres of production and describes its methods as regenerative.
Meat is butchered on the farm by Dougie, the team’s butcher, and sold with the farm’s own eggs. Bramblewood also works as a food hub, adding whatever neighbouring producers have grown or baked that week, and the website names bread from Ormiston and apple juice from Laprig, with veg, milk and cheese from neighbours. The farm trades at a monthly market at Eskbank Brewing Co on the last Sunday of the month and supplies Edinburgh restaurants including Cardinal and The Gilded Saloon. It runs monthly farm tours in the growing season and volunteer days, usually on Friday afternoons.
Visiting and buying
This is mainly a delivery farm rather than a walk in shop: the website says to order by midnight on Tuesday for delivery on Thursday, with free delivery on orders of £35 or more across Midlothian and into Edinburgh, or collection from a local pick up point. Orders can be one off, weekly or fortnightly, and can be paused or skipped. The website links to a Google Maps entry for a Bramblewood Farm Shop but does not publish shop opening hours, so ring before you go to the steading. Ask which items in your box were reared at Bramblewood and which came from neighbours, as the hub mixes both.

A third Saturday producer market in the grounds of Dalkeith Country Park
The Market at Dalkeith Country Park is a monthly market held on the third Saturday of the month in the grounds of the park, set up outside Restoration Yard. The park says it is an external event run by separate organisers, who take stall enquiries through their own Facebook page. Its listing describes produce from producers across the Lothians and Scotland, alongside food, drink, arts and crafts, artisan products, plants and charity stalls. It is the closest regular producer market for Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg and Danderhall.
The park does not name the stallholders, so this is a market to browse rather than a single farm’s shop. Because food stalls sit alongside crafts and gifts, not every trader is a farmer or grower, and it is worth seeking out the stalls selling their own meat, eggs and vegetables. Restoration Yard, next to the market, is a separate lifestyle store with a foodhall rather than a farm outlet.
Visiting and buying
The park’s listing gives market hours of 10am to 3pm, with the next market on Saturday 21 November 2026. The listing invites visitors to bring their dogs. Parking arrangements are not set out on the market page, so check the park’s website before you go. Ask each stall whether they reared or grew what they are selling, and check the organisers’ Facebook page for who is trading that month.

A Sunday village market and a new larder at a community run steading
Rosewell Market is held in the car park of The Steading on Carnethie Street, a community building run by the Rosewell Development Trust, a registered charity. The market is organised by SHS Events and brings together local food producers, makers, small businesses and community groups. The trust described the Sunday 3 May 2026 market as the first of the year. It is one of very few regular producer markets in the middle of the county, between Penicuik and Bonnyrigg.
For the May 2026 market the trust listed food stalls including Tweed Trotters for pork, The Little Bakery, Rola Mor, Deli Français, Mamma Young’s Bakehouse, a stall of free range eggs and jams, and Rift Valley Farms. Inside The Steading, The Village Cafe stays open on market days and uses fresh fish from JK Thomson, Mungoswells flour for its pizzas and Over Langshaw Farmhouse Ice Cream. The cafe’s operator, Enoch, launched The Village Larder in April 2026, and the trust says it sells local produce including Mungoswells flour, Supernature rapeseed oils and Shibui Tea.
Visiting and buying
The May 2026 market ran from 10am to 2pm. Later 2026 dates and any winter schedule are not published on the trust’s website, so check its calendar or ring The Steading on the number above before you go. The trust notes that The Steading car park closes from 3pm on the Saturday before a market so stalls can set up. Ask stallholders whether their meat and eggs come from their own farm, since the market mixes producers, bakers and makers.

Highland and Simmental cattle, Suffolk sheep and Saddleback pigs at Penicuik
Springfield Game and Country Meats is run by Gavin and Anna Brown from Springfield Farm on Springfield Road, Penicuik, where they moved in 2010. The couple describe the farm as a beef and sheep unit with pedigree cattle, sheep and pigs: Highland and Simmental cattle, pedigree Suffolk sheep alongside commercial breeds, and Saddleback pigs. Lambing runs from January to April. The business website says all of its beef, lamb and pork is reared on the farm and sold locally, direct to customers.
The website says products and cuts vary through the seasons. A Scottish Farmer profile from around 2019 reported that the range also took in wild venison from local estates and oven ready duck, pheasant and partridge, with a pork and black pudding sausage as the best seller and burgers such as lamb and mint and venison. The business was a finalist in the Artisan Food category at the Scottish Rural Awards 2019. The farm also runs holiday pods, and guests can buy a meat pack from the farm for the barbecue.
Visiting and buying
There is no shop with set hours. The website says you are welcome to come to the farm and buy direct but asks you to call first to make sure someone is in, and it holds monthly open mornings, with dates, stock lists and offers posted on its Facebook page. You can also order ahead and collect from the farm, and local delivery is free, with a small charge possible outside the Penicuik area. The farm lies south of Penicuik town centre on Springfield Road. Ask which cuts that week are from the farm’s own cattle, sheep and pigs and which game has been brought in from local estates.

Organic native breeds and a no dig market garden below the Pentlands
The Free Company took on the lease of Cockdurno farm at the foot of the Pentland Hills in 2016, on land that once carried a pedigree Ayrshire dairy herd, and brothers Angus and Charlie now run it with a young team. The farm raises native breeds of cattle, sheep and pigs and grows fruit and vegetables in a no dig market garden, and it is Soil Association certified organic. It sits just outside Balerno in the City of Edinburgh council area, not in Midlothian. It is included as the nearest organic farm with its own butchery for Penicuik and the western side of the county.
An on site butchery processes the farm’s own animals, and an online farm shop sells meat, vegetables and larder goods direct from the farm. The restaurant menu changes daily with what the farm has ready, and the restaurant and head chef Craig Turner were awarded a Michelin Green Star in February 2026. The farm also lists the Sustainability Award at the National Restaurant Awards 2025 and a Farming for the Future Award at the BBC Food and Farming Awards. It runs workshops and events through the year.
Visiting and buying
The website gives restaurant hours of Thursday from 5pm, Friday and Saturday from 12pm to 3pm and from 5pm, and Sunday from 12pm, with last sittings at 8.45pm, or 6pm on Sunday. Walk ins are welcome, but the farm asks you to call or WhatsApp first because private events sometimes close it. Farm shop orders go through the online shop, and collection or delivery arrangements are not set out on the main site, so check when you order. The farm notes that Uber drivers do not pick up this far out, so plan a lift or a taxi home. Ask which cuts that week are from the farm’s own herd and flock.

Where can you buy vegetables from a Midlothian farm?
This is the gap. I could not confirm a pick your own farm or a farm veg box grower inside Midlothian. The farms here are mostly livestock and barley, and the vegetables at the markets come from wherever the stallholders grow.
So ask at every stall: where is your farm, and did you grow this? For vegetables you can trace to one field, The Free Company’s market garden at Balerno is the closest I found. If you grow veg in Midlothian and sell it, tell me, and you will be in this guide.
Why a farm you can reach is part of being ready
The UK Government’s Be Ready campaign asks every household to manage for three days if services are disrupted. For Scotland, Ready Scotland sets out what to keep in a home emergency kit, and ready to eat food and bottled water are on the list.
A freezer of meat from a farm you know is one kind of ready; a market date in the diary is another. Read The Be Ready Campaign: a UK guide to stocking your home with healthy, local food, and our UK prepping guide.
Plan your visit, what to buy and how much
Choose one or two stops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will cook with it when you get home. If one crop is not in, change the meal, not the plan.
- Confirm opening days and any booking for the café or events.
- Ask what was grown or reared on the farm, and what was bought in.
- Check payment methods, and bring your own bags and boxes.
- Ask about parking and the right entrance for visitors.

Ten miles from Edinburgh, and the vegetables still mostly come from somewhere else. The land is here. The growers can be too. Tell me in the comments who you buy from in Midlothian, and I will add them.
