Farm Shops and Local Food in East Dunbartonshire

The best farm food in East Dunbartonshire is Kinkell Farm's no dig veg boxes at Lennoxtown, farm eggs from Fiona's Fresh at Barbeth Farm, the Milngavie and Kirkintilloch markets, and Dunbar's Daisies milk just outside at Glenmavis.

Commuter towns below the Campsies, two farms that sell direct, two markets and a milk machine just over the line

There are very few farm shops in East Dunbartonshire. This is commuter country, Bearsden, Milngavie, Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs, with the Campsie Fells behind. But the farms that do sell direct are worth knowing: Kinkell Farm at Lennoxtown, where the Hosie family grow no dig veg and microgreens for boxes, and Fiona’s Fresh at Barbeth Farm near Twechar for eggs. Add Milngavie Market, Kirkintilloch Farmers Market and, just over the line in North Lanarkshire, Dunbar’s Daisies milk at Glenmavis.

Seasonal vegetables on a farm stand, the kind of local food grown in East Dunbartonshire

Wait theyve started using it in the UK?!? Already?

That shock is the right reaction. You assume your food is what it looks like, and then you find out about the coating. (Here is what Apeel is and whether you can wash it off.)

The fix is not more worry. It is shorter supply chains. A box of veg from a field at Lennoxtown, twelve miles from Glasgow, has nowhere to hide a coating.

Where can you buy farm food in East Dunbartonshire?

Kinkell Farm is the strongest pick. The Hosie family have farmed there for around 140 years, and now grow no dig vegetables and microgreens and keep pastured hens. You order online; there are no published shop hours, so it is a box scheme first.

For eggs, Fiona’s Fresh at Barbeth Farm sells eggs laid on the farm, paid online and collected. The postal address says Cumbernauld, but the farm sits in East Dunbartonshire near Twechar.

For a browse, Milngavie Market on Douglas Street runs on the first and third Fridays, with meat and fish stalls among the rest, and Kirkintilloch Farmers Market meets monthly on a Sunday at the Regent Centre. For milk at any hour, Dunbar’s Daisies at Cromlet Farm, Glenmavis, is just outside in North Lanarkshire.

No dig vegetables and microgreens on a Hosie family farm

Kinkell Farm is owned and run by Claire and David Hosie, and the website says the farm has been in the Hosie family for around 140 years. It sits on Campsie Road at Lennoxtown, about 12 miles from Glasgow city centre. Claire and David have set up two diversification projects on the farm: a vertical farm growing microgreens and a no dig market garden growing seasonal vegetables. The farm says everything is grown in an agroecological way, without chemical fertilisers or pesticides and with as little soil disturbance as possible.

Most buying is through the online shop, where the Standard Seasonal Veg Box (listed at £15 and suited to two people) and the Deluxe Seasonal Veg Box (listed at £25 for three or four) are the core of the range. Farm grown lines listed include lettuce, beetroot, white cabbage, carrots and summer squash, alongside pea, sunflower, radish, broccoli, coriander and basil microgreens. Pastured layer eggs from the farm sit in the pantry section with Wood Yard Bees honey, Exhale coffee and Citizens of Soil olive oil. The farm says any veg it buys in comes from an organic supplier, and the fruit on the site is listed under Organic World.

Visiting and buying

The website does not publish shop opening hours. Orders are placed online, and the site lists a delivery area and collection points, so check those before you order. Box contents change with the season and the weather, and you can add exceptions to your account for anything you do not want. Each product listing names its grower, so look for items marked Kinkell Farm if you want produce from the farm itself.

Eggs laid on Barbeth Farm, ordered online and collected

Fiona’s Fresh Farm Shop sells eggs laid on Barbeth Farm. The farm has a Cumbernauld postal address, but it sits inside East Dunbartonshire, in the council ward that covers Kirkintilloch East and North and Twechar. The website describes the eggs as freshly laid on the farm. It does not say how many hens are kept or how they are housed, so ask if that matters to you.

The online range is short and simple. Listed items include a tray of eggs at £8.50, a half dozen at £2.00 and raspberry jam at £3.50. Cards and earrings by MustBeMaisy are also sold through the site. There is no café or butchery.

Visiting and buying

The website gives collection hours of 10am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday. You pay online and then book a collection slot so your order can be set out for you, and the FAQ says delivery is not offered at the moment. Barbeth Farm lies near Twechar, between Kirkintilloch and Cumbernauld, so use the full address and postcode for directions. The site has not been updated since 2022, so check the shop’s Instagram (fionas_fresh_farm_eggs) or Facebook page for current stock before you set off.

A Friday street market with Highland beef and Scottish pork stalls

Milngavie Market is run by SHS Events, which organises street markets across the west of Scotland, from Greenock and Helensburgh to Kirkintilloch. It is held on the first and third Fridays of each month on Douglas Street. It is a general market rather than a strict farmers’ market, so food producers trade alongside craft and gift stalls. It is included here because few places in East Dunbartonshire sell farm produce direct, and its stalls include meat from Scottish producers.

The listing names stalls for Highland beef, Scottish pork, fresh Oban Bay fish, smoked fish and shellfish, cheese, home baking, breads and Hairy Beast pies. Non food stalls cover organic soap and toiletries, candles, jewellery, cards, children’s books and plants. Stallholders vary from market to market, and the listing does not name the farms behind the meat stalls.

Visiting and buying

The dates listed for the rest of 2026 are 6 and 20 November and 4 and 18 December. The What’s On Glasgow listing gives both 10am to 4pm and 10am to 3pm, so go in the morning to be safe. Entry is free. Ask the beef and pork stallholders where their animals are raised and whether they farm themselves, as some market traders buy in.

A monthly Sunday market at the Regent Centre

Kirkintilloch Farmers Market is a monthly Sunday market held at The Regent Centre on Cowgate in Kirkintilloch. Its event listing describes more than 30 vendors selling local and award winning produce, handmade crafts and street food. The organiser is not named in the listing, which links to a Facebook page for the market.

The listing does not name individual stallholders, so the mix of farms and food businesses is not published in advance. Expect produce stalls next to craft and street food traders, much as at Milngavie. The market’s Facebook page is the place to see which traders are booked for each date.

Visiting and buying

The listing gives Sunday dates of 4 October, 1 November and 6 December 2026, but it also says the market runs on the third Sunday of each month, and its published start time looks like a placeholder. Check the Facebook page before you go. Entry is free. Ask stallholders which items they have grown, reared or made themselves.

Milk from the Dunbar family’s herd, at Cromlet Farm since 1899

Dunbar’s Daisies is the milk brand of the Dunbar family at Cromlet Farm, Glenmavis, near Airdrie. The farm is just outside East Dunbartonshire, in North Lanarkshire, south east of Kirkintilloch. A Scottish Parliament motion lodged in May 2024 records that the family has farmed at Cromlet since 1899, on 185 acres with a herd of pedigree cattle. The same motion congratulated Roberta Dunbar after her Barncluth herd was named British Friesian Herd of the Year.

The farm sells its milk from a self service vending machine. The Roadside Stall listing describes the milk as gently pasteurised and non homogenised, all from the farm’s own herd. Milkshakes in various flavours and reusable glass bottles are sold at the machine too. The listing does not mention any other produce.

Visiting and buying

The vending machine is listed as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and takes card and contactless only. Cromlet Farm is in Glenmavis, north of Airdrie, so use the postcode for directions. Reusable glass bottles are sold at the machine, so keep yours for the next visit. If you see anything other than milk on sale at Cromlet, ask whether it comes from the farm itself.

What does no dig growing mean?

It means the grower does not plough or turn the soil. Compost goes on top, and the soil life underneath is left to do its work. Less disturbance, less erosion, and a living soil that holds water and carbon.

That matters to me more than a logo. Soil is where vitality starts, and you cannot buy it back once it has blown away. When Kinkell tells you its veg is no dig, ask how long, and what goes on the beds. A grower who knows their soil will talk about it for an hour.

Why a farm you can reach is part of being ready

The UK Government’s Be Ready campaign asks every household to manage for three days if services are disrupted. For Scotland, Ready Scotland sets out what to keep in a home emergency kit, and ready to eat food and bottled water are on the list.

A weekly box and a farm you can drive to are part of that plan. Read The Be Ready Campaign: a UK guide to stocking your home with healthy, local food, and our UK prepping guide.

Plan your visit, what to buy and how much

Choose one or two stops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will cook with it when you get home. If one crop is not in, change the meal, not the plan.

  • Confirm opening days and any booking for the café or events.
  • Ask what was grown or reared on the farm, and what was bought in.
  • Check payment methods, and bring your own bags and boxes.
  • Ask about parking and the right entrance for visitors.
