Five verified places around Paisley, Renfrew and Inchinnan to buy food straight from the farm

The farm shops in Renfrewshire cluster on the flat ground around Glasgow Airport, between Paisley, Renfrew and Inchinnan. The five worth knowing are Arkleston Farm Shop and Kitchen in Paisley, which opened in 2025; Barnhill Farm Shop at Inchinnan, with refill milk; Locavore, the organic veg box grower now farming at Barnhill; East Yonderton Farm near Renfrew for picking your own; and Paisley Farmers Market twice a month.

Seasonal vegetables on a farm stand, the kind of local food sold in Renfrewshire

Under my Apeel post, one of you described the moment it clicked:

I was talking about this with my daughter today while having an apple and the skin felt like plastic 😮

A reader in my comments

That feeling is the reason this series exists. You should not have to wonder what is on the skin of your child’s apple. (Here is what Apeel is and whether you can wash it off.)

At a farm counter you can ask. At East Yonderton you can pick the fruit yourself. That is a different relationship with food, and Renfrewshire has more of it than people think.

Which Renfrewshire farm shop should you choose?

For a full weekly shop with a butcher and a café, Arkleston in Paisley is the newest and the biggest. It does not publish what the farm itself grows or rears, so ask at the counter.

Barnhill Farm Shop and Locavore share one farm at Inchinnan. Barnhill is the farm shop, with refill milk from a local dairy and its own baking. Locavore is the organic grower on 21 acres of that land, in conversion since 2025, and its boxes are delivered across Renfrewshire. Go to one, and you can sort the other.

East Yonderton near Renfrew is for picking: strawberries in summer, pumpkins in October. Paisley Farmers Market brings up to 30 producers to the town centre on the second and last Saturdays.

A new farm shop in a converted farm building beside the M8

Arkleston Farm Shop & Kitchen opened in August 2025 at South Arkleston Farm, on the north side of Paisley just off the M8. It is run by Angela and Ruaridh Smith, who ran another business at the farm for 12 years before turning an agricultural building into the shop and café. Angela told Mill magazine the project took about 18 months from first talks with architects. A farm retail directory says about 22 acres have been set aside for the shop’s own use.

The shop sells fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy and locally made goods, and says most of its stock comes from local farmers and producers. Angela says they use local produce where possible and Scottish where not, with a few items from family farms in southern England. There is a butcher and deli counter, and a café seating around 80 that serves breakfast, lunch and cake made with produce sold in the shop. The farm also runs ticketed pumpkin picking in autumn and Christmas markets.

Visiting and buying

The website gives opening hours of 9am to 5pm, seven days a week, for the shop and the butcher, with the café open 9am to 4pm and last food orders at 3.45pm. Arkleston Road runs between Paisley and Renfrew, close to Glasgow Airport and the M8. Pumpkin picking is booked online through Digitickets. The shop does not say what, if anything, is grown or reared on the farm itself, so ask at the butcher counter which farms the meat comes from.

Refill milk from a Bridge of Weir dairy on 70 acres by the River Gryfe

Barnhill Farm is a working farm of about 70 acres on the outskirts of Inchinnan, bordering the River Gryfe. The farm describes itself as having more than 15 years of history, and its shop had a food hygiene inspection in October 2025. The farm also hosts a separate butcher, Meat Joe at Barnhill, registered in September 2025, and Barnhill Boxes, which supplies fruit and vegetable boxes for collection or delivery. Part of the land is now farmed by the organic grower Locavore.

The shop sells seasonal produce from local farmers, food made by local producers, and bread and cakes baked on site. A refill station lets customers fill reusable bottles with chilled fresh milk from High Branchal Farm, a dairy near Bridge of Weir. A June 2026 report also lists eggs, cheese, orange juice refills and steaks, sausages, burgers and chicken from the butcher. The farm runs monthly markets with artisan makers and family attractions, including animal feeding.

Visiting and buying

Published hours differ: a farm directory gives 9am to 3pm, seven days a week, while a June 2026 report gives Thursday to Monday, 9am to 4pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so ring before you go. The farm is on Houston Road on the outskirts of Inchinnan, close to Glasgow Airport. Children’s entry to the farm attractions has been reported at 5 pounds. Bring your own bottles for the milk refill, and ask which vegetables that week were grown at Barnhill.

Organic veg boxes from 21 acres in conversion near Inchinnan

Locavore is a Glasgow social enterprise that grew organic vegetables on several small sites in and around the city for more than ten years before moving to 21 acres at Barnhill Farm at the start of 2025. The land had been grazed for decades with no artificial chemical inputs and is now in organic conversion. About 2 acres are a hand worked market garden, and the rest is worked with tractors bought in 2025. Polytunnels were being built to give about a third of an acre under cover by spring 2026.

The 2026 plan includes carrots, celery, fennel, squash, onions, leeks, five kinds of kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broad and borlotti beans, chard, beetroot and lettuce. Five potato varieties fill 3 acres. Crops are rotated by plant family, and green manures and cover crops build soil fertility. Planned agroforestry strips include about 80 apple trees and hundreds of blackcurrant bushes.

Visiting and buying

Locavore sells the farm’s produce through weekly veg boxes, delivered on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on location, and its delivery area includes Paisley and the rest of Renfrewshire. Its website does not mention sales at the farm gate, so order a box online or through the veg box line, which is staffed 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Its two shops are in Glasgow, on Victoria Road in Govanhill and Dumbarton Road in Partick. Ask which items in that week’s box were grown at Barnhill rather than bought in from other organic growers.

Visitors pick their own fruit in the field and pay for what they take. The farm posts its seasons and booking arrangements on its Facebook page.

Is a veg box better than the supermarket?

It depends whose box. A box from a reseller can be the same supermarket supply chain in a nicer cardboard. A box from a grower like Locavore is the opposite: you get what the field gave that week, and part of the price goes back into the soil.

Ask any box scheme three things. What did you grow yourselves this week? What did you buy in, and from whom? Are you certified, or in conversion? Locavore will tell you it is in conversion. That is the right answer, said plainly.

Why a farm you can reach is part of being ready

The UK Government’s Be Ready campaign asks every household to manage for three days if services are disrupted. For Scotland, Ready Scotland sets out what to keep in a home emergency kit, and ready to eat food and bottled water are on the list.

A veg box arriving every week is resilience you do not have to think about. Read The Be Ready Campaign: a UK guide to stocking your home with healthy, local food, and our UK prepping guide for the supplies that do not cost the earth.

Plan your visit, what to buy and how much

Choose one or two stops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will cook with it when you get home. If one crop is not in, change the meal, not the plan.

  • Confirm opening days and any booking for the café or events.
  • Ask what was grown or reared on the farm, and what was bought in.
  • Check payment methods, and bring your own bags and boxes.
  • Ask about parking and the right entrance for visitors.
