An organic market garden, a veg box farm, a monthly market and two farm shops just over the boundary
Real farm shops in Falkirk are few, so this guide is upfront about it. The five best places to buy farm food here are Greenheart Growers, an organic market garden that moved to Mavisbank Farm at Shieldhill in 2026; Your Local Farm, a veg box delivery from Slamannan; Falkirk Producers Market on the High Street once a month; and two farm shops just over the boundary, Hopetoun in West Lothian and Blairmains at Blairlogie in Stirling.

Under my post on pesticides in cut flowers, this comment got 68 likes:
I’ll scream it from the rooftops every day, if you can avoid supermarkets, avoid them.

In Falkirk, avoiding them takes a plan. Most of the towns sit within about six miles of the town centre, and most of that ground is housing and the industry around Grangemouth, not market gardens.
So here is the plan. (And if you want to know what is on the supermarket fruit you are avoiding, here is what Apeel is and whether you can wash it off.)
Where can you buy farm food in Falkirk?
Start with Greenheart Growers at Shieldhill, south of the town. It is an organic market garden run as a community interest company, and in 2026 it was reported to be opening a Friday farm shop selling veg picked that morning. Check its social pages before you go, as I could not confirm the shop opened.
If you would rather the food came to you, Your Local Farm at Slamannan delivers fruit and veg boxes. For meeting producers in person, Falkirk Producers Market runs on the first Saturday of the month on the High Street.
For a farm shop with a butcher counter, cross the boundary. Hopetoun Farm Shop, east of Bo’ness in West Lothian, sells beef and lamb reared on the estate. Blairmains, at Blairlogie below the Ochils in Stirling, is a deli and café stop; it no longer rears its own stock, so ask what is local.

An organic market garden new to Shieldhill in 2026
Greenheart Growers is a community interest company running an organic market garden at Mavisbank Farm in Shieldhill. It has been going since 2018, starting at Parkhead in Glasgow and then moving to Craigencalt Farm by Kinghorn Loch in Fife, before arriving at Mavisbank earlier in 2026. Andy McGovern leads the project. The garden grows without pesticides and has supplied salads, herbs, microgreens, vegetables and edible flowers to cafés and restaurants.
In July 2026 the Falkirk Herald reported that the team was about to open a farm shop at the market garden, selling organic produce harvested that same morning. The garden also runs volunteer sessions on Thursdays and Fridays, 11am to 4pm, covering seed sowing, potting on, transplanting and a shared meal. A paid Market Garden Experience Day ran in June 2026, with a farm lunch included. It is a small community enterprise, so the range in the shop will follow what is ready in the beds.
Visiting and buying
The Falkirk Herald reported opening hours of Fridays, 10am to 5pm, from 7 August 2026. Shieldhill is a village a short drive south of Falkirk town. The Greenheart website still describes the old Fife site, so check the Facebook page or ring Andy before you travel. Everything here is grown on site, so ask what was picked that morning and what is coming into season next.

A box scheme from a four generation farm at Slamannan
Your Local Farm is based at Balquhatstone Mains on the edge of Slamannan, in the south of the council area. It began in 1990 as a local producers’ cooperative and took the yourlocalfarm.co.uk name in 2002. The family has grown vegetables at Balquhatstone Mains for four generations, using what it describes as traditional methods. The Food Standards Agency lists the business as R & I Scott Your Local Farm.
The online shop sells fruit and vegetable boxes in several sizes, fruit bags, loose fruit and vegetables, farm eggs and meat. Boxes combine the farm’s own vegetables with produce from 18 local suppliers, who are not named. Deliveries run on Wednesdays to West Lothian and on Thursdays to Falkirk, Stirling, Glasgow and Cumbernauld, between 8am and 6pm. The website says there is no delivery charge on boxes, with £3.95 added to shop orders under £13.
Visiting and buying
This is a delivery scheme rather than a shop with a counter, and the website gives office hours of Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Slamannan is on the B803 near the River Avon, close to the North Lanarkshire border. Don’t turn up at the farm without ringing first; order online and choose a delivery frequency instead. Ask which vegetables in that week’s box were grown at Balquhatstone and which came from the other suppliers.

Local producers on the High Street on the first Saturday of the month
Falkirk Producers Market is organised by Falkirk Delivers, the town centre business organisation. It runs outdoors on the pedestrianised High Street on the first Saturday of each month, from March to December. One regional guide puts it at usually 15 to 25 stalls. Its food hygiene record was last inspected in March 2026, and 2026 editions have run through the summer and into October.
Falkirk Delivers lists stalls selling meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, vegan food and baking such as cakes and brownies. It is a market of local producers and small food businesses rather than a strict farmers’ market, so not every stall sells something it grew or reared. Some months add extras, such as the classic cars that came back for the July 2026 market. It is the most reliable way to meet several local food makers at once in the town itself.
Visiting and buying
Visit Falkirk gives opening hours of 10am to 4pm, though one regional guide lists 9am to 2pm, so check the Falkirk Delivers social pages before you go. The stalls line the pedestrianised part of the High Street in the town centre, so use one of the town centre car parks. If the first Saturday pattern holds, the last two dates of 2026 fall on 7 November and 5 December. Ask each stallholder whether they grew or reared what they are selling and where their farm is.

Estate reared Aberdeen Angus and Hebridean lamb
Hopetoun Farm Shop sells meat from the Hopetoun Estate, where livestock farming returned in 2011. The estate farms 3,000 acres in hand, with another 1,500 acres let to tenants, and about 600 acres of grassland carry the livestock. Aberdeen Angus cattle are wintered on straw in traditional housing and fed silage, then turned out to grass in spring and summer. Sheep come from three farms on the estate and include Mules, Texel cross lambs and Hebridean sheep, a breed kept at Hopetoun for over 200 years, while free range chickens and bronze turkeys are processed in the estate’s own poultry plant.
The butchery sells estate beef, lamb, seasonal game and poultry, with pork bought in from an award winning Ayrshire supplier. Steak burgers, sausages, kebabs and Aberdeen Angus steak pies are made in store. The deli counter has estate reared roast beef and roast minted lamb, plus Scottish cheeses. Bread and cakes come from Oliphants and from Fisher & Donaldson in Fife, with a gluten free range from The Wheat Wheat Free Bakery.
Visiting and buying
Visit West Lothian gives opening hours of every day, 10am to 5pm. Newton lies east of Bo’ness on the way to South Queensferry, and VisitScotland lists free parking on site. Hopetoun turkeys are sold fresh at Christmas, mostly by pre order from November. Ask which meat on the counter is estate reared that week, since the pork and some other lines are bought in.

A former dairy farm turned shop and Coffee Bothy
Blairmains is run by the Logan family at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Blairlogie. John Logan was a dairy farmer, and the family bred the Manor Powis dairy herd before deciding the farm was too small to support itself. The cows went to Devon, and the shop opened in June 2001 as a farm diversification project. Graeme Logan and his wife Lauren now run the business, which has grown from 8 staff to 60 and been extended six times.
The shop sells fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, frozen food and dry goods, with a deli counter of mince rounds, sausage rolls and quiches made on the premises. Cakes are baked in the Blairmains kitchens, and meat is sourced from the Carse of Stirling where possible. A wall map in the shop marks more than 60 places in Scotland that its stock comes from. The Coffee Bothy café serves home cooked meals and soups, and a second takeaway counter, the Coffee Bothy Express, opened in December 2007.
Visiting and buying
The website gives opening hours of Monday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm, closing at 4pm on Sundays. Blairlogie is on the A91 just east of Stirling, north of the Forth from the Falkirk council area. Parking is free and the shop is all on one level. The farm no longer keeps its own dairy herd, so ask which meat and vegetables came from farms on the Carse that week.

Is organic veg worth it in Falkirk?
Yes, when you can get it from the person who grew it. Organic is not a mood. It is a set of standards, and the point is what does not go on the soil and the plants.
Greenheart’s model is the one I want to see everywhere: picked in the morning, sold the same day, a few miles from where you live. Ask them what they grow through winter, and buy that. A grower who can sell all year is a grower who stays.
Why a farm you can reach is part of being ready
The UK Government’s Be Ready campaign asks every household to manage for three days if services are disrupted. For Scotland, Ready Scotland sets out what to keep in a home emergency kit, and ready to eat food and bottled water are on the list.
A box from Slamannan and a market date in your diary are part of that plan. Read The Be Ready Campaign: a UK guide to stocking your home with healthy, local food, and our UK prepping guide.
Plan your visit, what to buy and how much
Choose one or two stops that fit your route. Write down what you want, how much you need and what you will cook with it when you get home. If one crop is not in, change the meal, not the plan.
- Confirm opening days and any booking for the café or events.
- Ask what was grown or reared on the farm, and what was bought in.
- Check payment methods, and bring your own bags and boxes.
- Ask about parking and the right entrance for visitors.

An industrial area with one organic market garden is not a failure. It is a beginning, and beginnings need customers. Tell me in the comments if Greenheart’s shop is open, and what you bought.
